Sad news – the end is near for a popular Sunday football league

The end is in sight for the Rhyl and District Sunday Football League.

Two more matches will see out the 2022-23 season and the league will then disband for good.

An extraordinary general meeting of the R&DSL on Thursday night reluctantly accepted and decided things had run their course.

The current campaign has been a big struggle for the league, with just seven clubs involved and constant difficulties finding referees and pitches.

Some teams have also often found it a problem to raise enough players to fulfill fixtures.

Sunday football used to thrive on the North Wales coast, with the North Gwynedd and Anglesey League and Deeside Sunday League, as well as the Rhyl and District, proving highly popular.

But times have changed, with this latest blow signalling the end of an era.

The last NWCFA Sunday Challenge Cup Final between record five-time winners FC Mally of Llandudno Junction and Y Clwb Glan Conwy will be held at Bastion Gardens, Prestatyn, on April 16.

Then on April 23, the final league title winners will be decided when Conwy Comrades take on Royal Oak of Rhyl. Venue to be confirmed.

The Lee Jones Cup, Premier Cup and Steve Sayburn Trophy competitions have regrettably been cancelled.

It is always sad when something reaches its end, but without the required support and membership, saying farewell is sometimes for the best.

Of course, things disband and are relaunched, you can never count anything out, but for now let’s celebrate a great competition by supporting its final two big events on April 16 and 23.
