Llangefni manager Dan Gregg was full of praise for opponents Bangor 1876, but insists the 8-0 defeat at Nantporth on Sunday in no way defines his team’s season.
Before losing to the runaway North Wales Women’s League leaders, Cefni had won three on the bounce to cement themselves in the top five – a massive improvement on last season.
Gregg said: “Credit to Bangor they were fantastic today, played some beautiful football and it’s not hard to see why they are unbeaten so far.
“I really hope they go on to win it (the title) now especially for the Anglesey girls like Mia, Menna, Ella, Ceri etc.
“Bangor treated this game as a big one today and I’m sure they were expecting a tough one which shows the mark my team has made this season so far. Unfortunately we couldn’t make it tougher for them today but this game by no means defines my team’s season.
“I’m proud of everything we’ve done these last few weeks. This one’s gone now and on to Flint at home next week.”
Llangefni visited Nantporth for the second time in 2 weeks on Sunday to face champions-elect Bangor 1876.
After 9 points from a possible 9 in 2023, Cefni went into the game high on confidence but this Bangor side proved to be a step up in quality for the islanders.
It took just 12 minutes for Bangor to break through when Ffion Bee scored her second goal against Llangefni this season.
Danielle Barnfield, last year’s captain, made it 2-0 in the 27th minute followed by Anglesey girl Ella Jones and then the league’s top goal scorer Stevie Donougher made it 4-0 at the half time break.
Gregg’s Ynys Mon midfielder Mia Roberts then started the second half scoring on the 49th minute taking it to 5-0. Donougher then completed her brace and action for the day. Llangefni improved from then on with new signing Jess Jones showing some lovely touches and threatening in behind.
Two goals in the last 5 minutes from Anglesey girls Ceri Lois and Menna Evans wrapped up a 8-0 for the unbeaten Bangor.
