FLASHBACK – 15 years ago: Nefyn United knock out FAW Amateur Trophy holders
Fifteen years ago Nefyn United produced one of their best results for many a day when they knocked holders Rhos Aelwyd out of the FAW Trophy.
Managed by legendary Llŷn defender John Gwynfor Jones, the Penwaig made it all the way to the semi-finals in 2008-09 before losing to Penycae.
The 1-0 win over 2007-08 Trophy winners Rhos on October 23, 2008 was a grand occasion for the hosts at Caer Delyn.
Fifteen years on, today (January 28) was also FAW Trophy day and Rhos Aelwyd progressed to the quarter-finals. Nefyn went out in the last round.

It was celebration time for Nefyn at Caer Delyn as they dumped holders Rhos Aelwyd out of the FAW Trophy to set up a home tie with Berriew in the last 16.
Alan Jones’ first half penalty was enough to secure what must rank as one of the finest victories in the Penwaig’s recent history.
Next up is Berriew, a crack village side currently lying third in the Spar Mid-Wales League but with games in hand on the teams above them. They have already won 4-0 at mighty Brymbo and defeated Chirk 4-1 after extra time in this season’s competition so will provide tough opposition for Nefyn on November 22.
But having knocked 2008 Trophy winners Rhos Aelwyd out, why should John Gwynfor Jones’ side fear anyone!
“It was a great performance by the lads – they deserved the win,” said player-boss Jones.
“The back five played especially well. Rhos were a decent side, very strong and physical but they could also play football.”
The only goal came on 38 minutes when Brian Matthews was brought down in the area and a penalty was awarded. Alan Jones fired home to the keeper’s right to make it 1-0.
Rhos defender, the ironically named Nefyn Davies, was red-carded for disputing the spot-kick decision too vehemently.
After the break Nefyn thought they had scored a second when Caron Williams finished off a Jason Jones cross, but was harshly adjudged offside.
Jason Jones also shot into the side netting and Llyr ap Gruffydd went close, while at the other end Ian Aikman produced two excellent saves.
