Revenge was sweet as Bangor 1876 completed a double over the first team to ever beat them in a competitive game.
In their debut 2019-20 campaign, the fan-owned club had won all 13 matches before going down 4-1 at Llanrwst United in an FAW Trophy tie.
There were two levels between the teams then – Llanrwst in Welsh Alliance Division One and 1876 the Gwynedd League – but tonight they met at the same standard, the third-tier Ardal North West.
Back in August, Michael Johnston’s side had triumphed 3-1 at Gwydir Park and it was Bangor who also claimed the win this evening to reclaim top spot and stretch their unbeaten run to 12 games.
In difficult conditions at Treborth, the first half saw few chances, with the Rwsters giving as good as they got.
The situation changed in added time at the end of the opening period when Gethin Thomas applied a calm finish.
In the second half, the battle remained intense and 1876 could not relax until a familiar source put them 2-0 up in the 77th minute.
Top-scorer Corrig McGonigle fired home an exquisite strike from the edge of the box to make it 43 goals in 19 matches this season – a pretty special achievement at tier 3 or any other level.
