Tributes to our friend Mark Jones – football was more of a beautiful game for having enjoyed his involvement

Tributes have poured in to Mark Jones, friend, advisor and contributor to Grassroots North Wales and former secretary and vice-chairman of Prestatyn Town FC, who passed away last week.

It is obvious from the many messages received how loved and respected Mark was, not just for his contributions to North Wales football, but many other spheres.

We are proud to publish some of the very kind words sent to both us and published on social media.

I was sorry to hear the news that Mark had passed away. I had known him for many years through his association with Prestatyn Town AFC and his football memorabilia business.

I can say he  probably got me most of the rare Bangor City programmes in my collection. He was a lovely man and always had time to chat  about football etc .

I got them to post a  notice with reference to your tribute about Mark’s passing on the football programme centre forum and many people have left their respects there.

I also let Paul Matz, editor of Programme Monthly, know so he could let other collectors know. Mark is going to be sorely missed by all who knew him and especially his family and yourself.

Just a quick note to say that your tribute to Mark Jones on the website is lovely and so heartfelt. I used to enjoy chatting to Mark when he had the shop in Prestatyn, and as you say, he was so knowledgeable about football and music, but such a humble person too. 

I remember talking to him for ages about The Jam and all the band’s gigs he attended in the early eighties. He seemed a lovely person and will be sadly missed.

I first met Mark when I became the WFA councillor representing the North Wales clubs in 1995.

When I visited Prestatyn Town FC, I found him so welcoming and always helpful with any information that I asked for regarding PFC. Rest in Peace Mark.

I’m very saddened to hear about Mark’s passing. Before I attended my first Town game around 2012, I was posting on the club’s Twitter page and Mark rang me (out of the blue) and gave me all the info I needed and chatted away to me like we had known each other for years.

We are sorry to hear that Mark Jones, our great friend and lifelong supporter of our club passed away in the early hours of this morning. The service that Mark gave our club was immense and will not be forgotten. RIP

The younger generation will never know that sense of anticipation on a Tuesday, or Wednesday if you were unlucky, waiting for The Visitor to drop through the letterbox. 

Mark and his words will be sadly missed by many.
