FAW Women’s Welsh Cup quarter-finals 2022-23 – Sunday, December 11

Cardiff City v Abergavenny
Cardiff Met v Llandudno
Cardiff Wanderers v Briton Ferry Llansawel
Wrexham v Aberystwyth Town

PREVIEW BY DAVE JONES

If Llandudno are to reach this season’s FAW Women’s Cup semi-finals they must achieve something they have never done before.

Sarah Colville’s side have to get past Cardiff Metropolitan to make the last four – and in all the years they have played them in league and cups, Tudno have never beaten the students in many attempts.

Obviously there is a good reason for this…..

Since the Women’s Welsh/Cymru Premier was formed, Met have always been a major force, winning a joint record six league titles.

Llandudno sisters Erin Doran (left) and Louisha Doran in action on the training ground

They have also lifted the Premier League Cup/Adran Trophy four times and scooped three Welsh Cups, as well as often representing Wales in Europe.

Met have always had the pick of the best footballing talent studying at the university and beyond.

So obviously, Sunday visitors from a lower league will enter the last eight tie as underdogs.

Llandudno spent eight seasons in the WPWL, achieving a highest position of sixth and reached one Welsh Cup final, in 2015-16, where they were beaten by Cardiff City FC Women.

To progress further in this season’s Welsh Cup, Tudno will have to end the long-running Met jinx, but the tier 2 Genero Adran North champions have already laid one ghost this term.

The word Forza and the name Mari Gibbard go very well together

The black and whites (although they were in sky blue on the day) pulled off a superb 2-1 win at tier 1 Adran Premier giants Swansea City, who they had also never defeated before, in the Adran Trophy last month.

Can that result have given Llandudno the belief that the elite South Wales women’s teams really can be beaten? They have turned over one tier 1 club after a long journey south – can they manage it again?

Tudno are currently third in the Genero Adran North and have reached two national quarter-finals.

This is the squad manager Sarah Colville (hopefully) has to choose from for Sunday. Obviously there will be the usual problems associated with an amateur side from North Wales making the arduous trip to the south and back. Can players get the necessary time off work or from family duties etc?

Caitlyn Bibby-Fry

Last season’s title-winning keeper Sara Williams was always going to take some replacing, but Caitlyn has done a fine job in her nine appearances so far, especially in the Swansea tie.

Hannah Smith

Experienced player with great touch and passing ability, her former clubs include Tranmere Rovers Under-16’s, Llandudno Junction, Bangor City, Bethesda Athletic and Penrhyn Bay. Joined Llandudno in February 2022.

Madison Williams

Wales Under-17 international. A centre-back or full-back, she was a standout player for Llandudno Ladies in their 2021-22 title-winning campaign.

Rebecca Jarvis-Evans

Tall, strong defender who was undoubtedly one of the most reliable performers in Llandudno’s championship-winners of last season. Long-servant with the club.

Jasmin Dutton

Rejoined Llandudno in 2021-22. Occupies a holding role just in front of the back-four or central midfield, but can also venture forward to great effect, as her goalscoring record proves.
Was with Tranmere Rovers Ladies from 2000-11 and represented the Welsh national teams between 2003-11, winning eight caps for the full international side. A true diamond.

Smiling as usual are Mari Gibbard (left) and Shona Roberts – great to see players enjoying training sessions

Shona Roberts

Strong and adaptable defender or midfielder who returned to Llandudno this season after spending last term at CPDM Y Felinheli. Has spent most of her career with Tudno.

Louisha Doran

Former Everton and Wales Under-17 who can play in any position. Inspirational player whose other ex-clubs include Colwyn Bay, Mochdre, Kinmel Bay, Tranmere Rovers and Chester. Personal trainer who won numerous world kickboxing titles in her younger days.

Mari Gibbard

Top-scorer this season with 14 goals and a stunning talent who is equally effective with both feet. Past Welsh Schools Cup winner with Ysgol Brynrefail, scoring a hat-trick in the final. Has spent most of senior career with Bethel, but now in second spell at Llandudno.

Maddie Williams

Scored an amazing 32 goals in a sensational debut 2021-22 season where she won the Genero Adran North League title and North Wales Coast Cup. Already into double figures this term.

Ffion Owen

One of the best midfielders North Wales has produced, she regularly appears on the scoresheet and stars in the assists column. Ffion has won league titles with Caernarfon Town, Amlwch Town and Llandudno. Silver medalist with Ynys Môn at 2019 Inter Games Tournament.

Indie Hassall

New Zealand wonder who scored the two goals in last season’s title decider against Wrexham which ensured Llandudno finished as champions. Left-sided speed merchant with an eye for goal and a great crosser.

Sofie Owen (capt)

No-one was more proud than Sofie last season when she lifted the league championship trophy with her beloved Llandudno. Fantastic club servant who also played for the former Llandudno Junction. Mainly a defender nowadays, attacker and goal-scorer in the past.

Sioned Phillips

Right-winger who laid on the winning goal for Indie which made sure of the title for Llandudno last season. Former Bethel and Llanberis star and a top quality rugby union player.

Kelsey Davies

Pacy right-winger who scored a spectacular winner for Llandudno in their famous Genero Adran Trophy win at Swansea City this season. Welsh Football Trust Female Player of the Year in 2012. Made her mark with Kinmel Bay before going on to shine with Llandudno in the WPWL over several seasons.

Erin Doran (facing) keeps her eye on the ball (No 100% sure who the other player is)

Erin Doran

Classy young midfielder who captained Penrhyn Bay in two FAW Under-16 Welsh Girls Cup finals before making the step up to senior football with Llandudno this season. Younger sister of Louisha.

Cat Jones

Long-serving player who is strong in the tackle and can always be relied upon to put in a great shift.

Charlotte Perry

Gaining experience in the first team squad this season with four appearances from the bench. Developed her skills with Penrhyn Bay Girls teams.

Cara Wyn Hughes

Back at Llandudno this season, having previously represented the club in 2019/20. Hard-working right-back who has also starred for Pwllheli and Caernarfon Town.

Stacey Tradewell

Another long-time servant of the club who had her best-ever season for goals in 2021-22, scoring 20 times from midfield. Tough-tackling, powerful shooting, skillful passer who has featured in just four games so far this season, but produced four assists.

Ceri Slaney

More than played her part as a right-winger in Llandudno’s league and cup successes last season, getting her share of goals. Ex-Caernarfon, Amlwch Town, prolific trophy winner.
