RESULTS AND REPORTS FOR ROUND ONE

Denbigh Town 2 Llay Welfare 1

Nathan Brown’s quickly-taken 77th minute free kick clinched Denbigh at home tie against Bangor 1876 in the Ardal North Cup second round.

Friday night’s clash at Central Park saw Town have to work hard in overcoming 10-man Llay Welfare.

The visitors had defender Ryan Dacey and manager Mike Gadie both red carded.

Town’s early pressure paid off in the 11th minute when Brown’s high ball deep into the Llay penalty box led to former Denbigh defender Max Peate heading into his own goal.

Llay reacted well and from a 20th minute corner, Jared Taylor floated a tempting ball into the six-yard box for Tom Wells to beat everyone and head in from close range.

With both teams fighting for every ball and some feisty tackles being seen, tempers were frayed on a couple of occasions during which Llay’s manager Gadie was shown the red card for comments to the referee.

Both sides had attacking moments, but it stayed 1-1 at the break.

Llay started the second half the brighter, Rhys Lloyd heading inches over the bar.

In the 67th minute the visitors were down to 10 men when Dan Clarke was hacked to the ground by Ryan Dacey and referee Martin Trigg promptly brandished a straight red card. Clarke had to leave the field shortly after as a result of the challenge.

With the extra man, Denbigh took control and experienced long spells of possession.

Town were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area after 77 minutes.

As the Llay defence were contesting the decision, they delayed preparation for the kick. Brown showed his initiative and after obtaining consent from referee Trigg to take the kick, he quickly fired in as Llay were preparing their wall. Kyle Flower in the Llay goal was not in position and the ball hit the corner of the net.

Sion Jones and substitute Ollie Hansen went close to a third for the hosts.

During eight minutes of injury time Llay had a couple of opportunities to get the equaliser, but they were thwarted by the impressive central defensive pairing of Billy Holmes and Dan Parry Jones.

In a tougher tie than perhaps anticipated for the hosts, 1876 led just 2-1 after 88 minutes before late strikes from Ben Owen and Tom Clarke clinched the win.

With the prolific Corrig McGonigle for once unable to boost his tally, the home side did not break the deadlock until the 55th minute when Clarke found the net.

Against the odds, Tom Gunson levelled on 70 before Joe Culshaw made it 2-1 after 76.

The outcome was in the balance before Owen and Clarke struck on 88 and 92 minutes respectively.

Bow Street 3 Cefn Albion 1

Albion’s constant problem with keeping 11 players on the field this season haunted them again as they had two sent off on this afternoon to forget at Bow Street.

Jordan Williams handed the Cefners a seventh-minute lead, but early in the second half, Kien Morris was shown a second yellow for the visitors and Richard Ricketts put away the resultant penalty.

John James and Rhys Hughes added further goals for the hosts, then Nic Jones was shown a second yellow which meant Albion were reduced to nine.

Caersws 5 Llandrindod Wells 1

A brace from Glyn Coney and further goals from Neil Mitchell, Craig Harris and Scott Williams saw Caersws through, Rob Nicholas with a late consolation for Wells.

Corwen 1 Rhos Aelwyd 5

Tom Smith (2), Daniel Roberts, James Rumsey and Scott Reeves guided Rhos into the next round, Scott Evans the home marksman.

Llanfair United 4 Welshpool Town 0

Ryan McVeigh, Karl Seliaerts, Richard Davies and Nyasha Mwamuka shared Llanfair’s goals in a convincing win.

Llangefni Town 2 Nantlle Vale 1

Llangefni gained revenge for two previous league losses to Nantlle this season by knocking them out of the cup.

Dewi Thomas and Alun Roberts struck for Cefni, Sion Jones replying for Vale, who had Mathew Davies and Guto Gwenallt both red-carded late on.

Llangollen Town 1 Llanlluwchllyn 2

Nine-man Llanuwchllyn still came away from Tower Field victorious, Michael Pritchard (pen) and Joe Williams grabbing the visiting goals.

Jack Goulbourn levelled for Llangollen midway through the second half, but despite having Iwan Roberts and Sam Evans dismissed for a pair of yellows apiece, on 56 and 95 minutes respectively, Riki Rowlands’ side took the win.

Llanrhaeadr 2 Dolgellau Athletic 3

Gerwyn Williams (2) and a Matthew Digwood own goal booked Dolgellau’s passage into the second round.

The visitors also had Jake Jones sent off for a straight red on 86 minutes.

Matthew Evans and Joe Vaughan hit back for the hosts.

Llanrwst United 2 Llandudno Albion 2 (Llanrwst won 4-3 on pens)

The Rwsters progressed by the narrowest of margins after a close-fought battle at Gwydir Park.

Tom Jones handed United a third-minute lead before Adam Hold squared the tie on 15.

Sion Roberts nudged the home side ahead in first half injury time, but Dave Maddock made it 2-2 on 52 minutes.

No more goals so it was down to pens and Llanrwst edged it 4-3.

Sam Roberts, Leon Doran, Tom Jones and Cynan Edwards converted for the home side, while for Albion, Bryan Roberts’ kick was hit wide and Hold’s effort was saved by Gwydion Owen.

Rhayader Town 0 Penycae 2

Jack Brindley and Liam Skelnar were the goal-scoring heroes for Penycae, who had Zac Davies sent off late on.
