Four goals from the phenomenal Corrig McGonigle boosted his tally to 32 in just 13 games across all competitions this season as 1876 coasted into the last 32 of the FAW Amateur Trophy at The Mine.
Tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier Division Meliden hosted the team at the summit of the Tier 3 Ardal North West League in this much-awaited encounter.
McGonigle went close and Sion Edwards swung a corner from the left which hit the post before being cleared prior to the visitors taking a 16th minute lead.
Jamie Petrie did well to beat his man on the right and dribbled towards the by-line before cutting the ball back for McGonigle to score from close range.
Petrie had a lively first half and almost made it two, but his powerful shot from the right of the penalty area was tipped over by Morgan Parker.
The second away goal arrived on 32 minutes. Edwards’ corner found the head of Tom Clarke, whose effort was cleared off the line, but McGonigle turned in the rebound.
HALF-TIME: Meliden 0-2 Bangor 1876
Meliden had their first clear chance of the game 10 minutes into the second half, but James Cairns shot over from just outside the six-yard box.
On the hour, Matthew Griffiths’ strike from just outside the box was saved by 1876 keeper Ben Heald.
Within a minute, however, Bangor extended their advantage. Kian Owen swung in a cross from the left and McGonigle completed yet another treble – his sixth of the season – with a downward header.
Halfway through the second period, Petrie lashed just wide of the near post.
Inside the final quarter hour, a fourth goal for the blues 1876 finally arrived. Liam Morris headed down a high ball into the path of Dylan Williams, who found the net with a composed finish from 10 yards out.
During injury time, McGonigle made it five. Shaun Lock played in a cross from the right and the ball was inadvertently nodded into the striker’s path by a Meliden defender. This enabled McGonigle to complete the scoring with his fourth.
