Take a bow Asa Thomas – 600 career goals and counting!

The Trearddur Bay striker reached the magic number with his first net-finder in today’s thrilling 4-2 win against Cefni in North Wales Coast West Division One.

Asa, 31, admits he should have hit the landmark last weekend, when he missed a penalty against Llangoed and District, which if converted would have taken him on to 600.

Uncharacteristically, he also failed from the spot today, but that elusive goal finally arrived in the 64th minute. He added another later in the game to reach 601.

“I thought it wasn’t going to happen again today after missing that (the penalty) but it came eventually,” said Asa, who is on 19 for this season.

There to witness the special moment was Asa’s dad Jimmy Thomas, a prolific scorer himself on Anglesey in years gone by.

Asa said: 600th career goal up and no better man to do it in front of. All he’s done is support me all of these years…. My dad – my number 1.”

Well over 200 of Asa’s goals have come in a Trearddur Bay shirt, which include a phenomenal 112 in the 2010-11 season.

He rejoined the Lon Isallt club this season after a remarkable 2021-22 alongside Marc Evans at Bodedern Athletic.

The pair rattled up 126 goals between them, Evans 68 and Asa 58, as Boded won the tier 4 North Wales Coast West Premier Division title.

Asa’s next target is to equal the 631 goals that Holyhead legend Tommy Welsh amassed in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

The late Mr Welsh, who passed away in 2019 aged 90, set what is believed to be the North Wales coast goal scoring record, most of his success coming with Holyhead Town.

The only player known to have scored more than 631 senior career goals is Euryn Williams, who hit 683 for Bro Cernyw between 1990-2006.

Asa said: “631 is definitely the next target, we’ll see what happens after that.”
