Ten years ago – true Joy for Prestatyn Town’s women in the Welsh Cup

Joy Jamieson (front row – furthest left) is now a key part of CPD Y Rhyl 1879 women’s coaching and management team, but 10 years ago she was a match-winning hero for Prestatyn Town in the Welsh Cup. Many thanks to Cambrian Savings & Loans for sponsoring Rhyl senior women’s new playing kit and matchday teamwear (in which they are pictured)

Ten years ago I began reporting on North Wales women’s football and one of my earliest round-ups featured four Welsh Cup ties.

Some of these players are still performing today, others not so. Some have gone into management or coaching, others have experienced motherhood and started a family.

Joy Jamieson

Captain Joy Jamieson returned from injury in style by scoring the two goals which secured Prestatyn a notable giant-killing over Welsh Premier League Northop in the first round of the Welsh Cup.

Jamieson, who suffered a broken ankle in May, could not have wished for a better outcome in her first full game back as she netted twice from corners in the first half.

“It was a cracking performance,” said Prestatyn manager and Joy’s proud husband Tom.

“We matched them all over the park and to their credit a lot of Northop’s players after the game said it was a fair result.”

Prestatyn, who are unbeaten in the North Wales Women’s League this season, now advance to round two of the Welsh Cup full of confidence.

Wrexham 11 Llanfair United 0

Sydney Hinchcliffe on joining Yeovil in 2020

An historic first game at Colliers Park for Wrexham Ladies produced a memorable result as they rattled up double figures over their outclassed opponents.

Lowri Edwards struck the bar for the home side before the deadlock was broken on 18 minutes when Alys Hinchcliffe was denied by a great save, but Syd Hinchcliffe was on hand to snap up the rebound.

On the half-hour the lead was doubled as Syd Hinchcliffe’s effort was kept out, but Edwards netted the loose ball.

In the 35th minute Syd Hinchcliffe used her pace before applying a lovely finish and it was so nearly four when Lowri Edwards struck the crossbar.

Chloe Foster added a fourth and on the stroke of half time, defender Steph Taylor headed in Lyndsey Rodger’s corner at the back-post

Four minutes after the restart Syd Hinchcliffe completed her hat-trick after following up a Davies shot which was saved.

Hinchcliffe set up Lowri Edwards for her second on 53 minutes and just before the hour a lovely run from player of the match Kate Edwards saw her play in Hinchcliffe, who provided the assist for Davies to make it 8-0.

Lowri Edwards registered her hat-trick on 67 minutes with a cool finish, Davies notched number 10 and her second after 71 and Foster completed the rout.

Wrexham scorers: Syd Hinchcliffe 3, Lowri Edwards 3, Jade Davies 2, Chloe Foster 2, Steph Taylor.

Wrexham secretary Amber Dean said: “As we were without a game last week, it took us five or 10 minutes to settle down, but once the first goal went in there was no stopping us.

“Colliers Park is fantastic, like a bowling green, and it helped us play our passing game.”

Llandudno Junction 3 Llanidloes 8

Trailing just 2-1 at half time, Junction capitulated in the second period and mid-Wales visitors Llanidloes went on to win comfortably.

Simone Drummond netted in the first half for the hosts, with further goals after the break supplied by Rhian Mahoney and Sarah Lawson.

Llandudno Junction’s cause was not helped when the influential Hollie Farr had to leave the field in the second half due to feeling unwell.

Llanidloes’ hero was Steph Hughson, who hit four goals, Kate Thomas added two, Sian Jones one and there was an own goal from Cat Higgitt.

Caernarfon Town 6 Kinmel Bay 0

Katie Williams (now Davies) in her Caernarfon Town days

Three players scored two goals apiece for a dominant Caernarfon side at The Oval.

Katie Williams bagged a first half brace, and a Katie Bowe single made it 3-0 at the interval.

In the second period, Bowe doubled her total with a superb 25-yard left-footer, then substitute Alison Mummery, who replaced Williams, also poached a pair of goals.
