Looking ahead to Sunday’s FAW Women’s Welsh Cup northern ties

FAW WOMEN’S CUP ROUND ONE (2 pm kick-offs) – SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9

Aberystwyth Town v Pwllheli

Very big task awaiting Pwllheli as they travel to Genero Adran Premier side Aberystwyth.

Now in the tier 3 North Wales Women’s League after self-demotion over the summer, Pwllheli have made a great start to the current campaign with four straight victories.

The Llŷn side proved themselves a force to be reckoned with last season with great efforts in cup defeats against the cream of the crop in Wales, Swansea City and Cardiff City FC Women.

Lois Thomas

If they have their strongest team available, Pwllheli can give Aber a good test.

Lois Thomas, who has scored six goals in four games so far this term, will be a player to watch for the visitors at Park Avenue.

Amlwch Town v Llandudno

After beating Llangefni 4-1 in the last round, Amlwch know Genero Adran North champions Llandudno will be much more difficult opposition.

Tudno have won all three matches played this season, scoring 20 goals in the process.

Their squad includes former Amlwch players Ffion Owen and Ceri Slaney, both title winners with the Seasiders last season.

Ellie Jones

Amlwch have some exciting young talent, especially in attack with Ellie Jones and Tesni Hughes always offering a goal threat.

These teams met last season in the NWCFA Challenge Cup, Llandudno winning 5-0 at Maesdu Park.

Connah’s Quay Nomads v Llanfair United

Nomads are off to a flyer and will fancy their chances of eliminating a Llanfair outfit which has lost each of its three games 6-0 so far.

The Quay possess all manner of goals potential, Shannon Hobbs, Kirstie Kural and Jennifer Haynes all starting the campaign well.

CPDM Y Felinheli v Wrexham

Felinheli’s morale will have been boosted by last weekend’s first league win at the expense of Rhyl 1879, but Wrexham are likely to present a bigger hurdle for the team formerly known as CPDM Bethel.

With eight goals in her first two matches, Rosie Hughes, who hit 48 in all competitions last season, is an obvious danger.

However, Wrexham possess other threats, and it will be up to players like the in-form Jordan Roberts to make an impact for the hosts.

CPD Y Rhyl 1879 v NFA

Tie of the round as two Rhyl sides meet.

Last season, 1879 won all three games between the teams, including a 5-1 Welsh Cup triumph.

Rhyl went on to lift the North Wales League title without suffering a single defeat, while NFA ended as runners-up.

1879 have been promoted to tier 2 Genero Adran North this term and are finding the going tough so far, while NFA are flying at the tier 3 North Wales League summit, providing goals galore.

Sunday should be a good contest at Belle Vue.

If Rhyl’s main playmakers are on song, they can dominate, but NFA have a lively front line who are capable of swinging the tie.

The New Saints v Airbus UK Broughton

Saints have seen off Aberystwyth and Abergavenny in their last two Genero Premier games and should prove too strong for Airbus.

The Wingmakers have some talented players and a few promising new faces, but they have lost both games so far this term and will need to show a massive improvement to upset TNS.
