What is it about Katie Bowe and the Welsh Cup?

CHRIS HOWELLS captures the moment Katie Bowe scored a Welsh Cup wonder goal at Aberystwyth in November 2016.

North Wales football icon Katie Bowe has a unique relationship with the Women’s Welsh Cup.

The Bangor-born attacking midfielder, renowned for her long-range goals, has an uncanny knack for finding the net in our most famous national knockout competition.

She was on the mark just this weekend, scoring in a 3-1 win for Pwllheli at Northop Hall.

However, Katie has also scored in a Welsh Cup final and notched at least one hat-trick in the competition.

Here are FIVE Welsh Cup ties where Katie has made a major impact…..

1 LLANDUDNO v Llanfair United (2015-16)

Katie was unstoppable this afternoon at Maesdu Park as she scored three scintillating goals past a hapless Llanfair in a 7-1 win.

2 Kinmel Bay v CAERNARFON TOWN (2018-19)

This tie ended 6-5 to Caernarfon but the Canaries were 5-4 down before Katie clinched the match with a double.
She equalised from a free kick, then ran through the Kinmel defence before rounding the keeper and putting away the winner.
Two players scored hat-tricks in this tie – Niomi Taylor of Kinmel Bay and Caernarfon captain Ffion Owen.
Jasmine Kepil and Jess Jones also struck for Bay, while Steph Davies was Town’s other markswoman.

3 Aberystwyth Town v LLANDUDNO (2016-17)

One of Katie’s very best Welsh Cup goals came via a left-foot free kick which sealed a 1-0 win at Park Avenue in November 2016.

The Welsh Cup goal Katie is most renowned for as she created history with it.
Although Llandudno lost 5-2 in the final at Latham Park, she put the North Wales side ahead early on with a stunning left-foot effort from about 25 yards after a great build-up.
This diamond moment ensured Katie became the first woman ever to be nominated for S4C Sgorio’s Goal of the Month award.

5 PWLLHELI v Llandudno (2021-22)

On the ball for Pwllheli

Katie broke the hearts of her former club when her perfectly-timed run led to a winning goal for Pwllheli in a 2-1 victory against much-fancied Llandudno at Recreation Road (or The Rec).

Did you know?

  • In 2015-16, Katie scored 21 goals in all competitions from central midfield for a Llandudno side then competing in the Welsh Premier Women’s League.
  • Katie netted SEVEN goals in a single game for Mountain Rangers in 2019-20.
  • During that 2015-16 Welsh Cup adventure, Katie scored in every round except the 4-0 semi-final victory over Denbigh Town, where she was player of the match.
