North Wales Women’s League preview – return to Cofis for Sara Williams

Caernarfon Town new signing Sara Williams in action for Llandudno last season

Caernarfon Town have re-signed one of their best known past players ahead of tomorrow’s big kick-off in the North Wales Women’s Football League.

Veteran Sara Williams has rejoined the Canaries after firstly landing at Amlwch Town earlier in the summer.

The 34-year-old was goalkeeper for Llandudno during their 2021-22 Adran North title-winning campaign.

She decided in June to return to former club Amlwch as an outfield player, but after further consideration she has now switched to Caernarfon, whom she captained in the Welsh Premier Women’s League in 2017-18.

Caernarfon resigned from the North Wales Women’s League early last season due to a lack of players, but have now rebuilt and will give things another go this term under new manager Owain Jones.

The squad is talented but very young, so Sara has joined up to give them the benefit of her experience.

Sara said: “I have recently signed for Caernarfon Town ladies due to commitments with my son’s football (in Caernarfon, where the family live) and also have joined the ladies to help and bring my experience to the team.”

Llangefni Town v CPDM Bangor 1876

Llangefni hope to be stronger for the experience of what was at times a tough, but also on other occasions a very rewarding first season in competitive football.

They have a difficult test first up against CPDM Bangor 1876, who have looked promising in pre-season.

1876 have lost last season’s top-scorer Jordan Roberts to CPDM Y Felinheli, but new faces include experienced defender Jenna Allsup, who was at Bethel last season, and hopes to feature in a more attacking role for Bangor.

As for Llangefni, manager Dan Gregg reports the squad is not in too bad a shape for Sunday’s opener, although last season’s top goal getter Jen Cox is unavailable.

“No injuries for us,” he said. “Jen Cox is back from a broken wrist but is away this week, as well as Megan Tyne Wood.

“Cara Hughes has recovered from a long lay off and trained this week but Sunday comes just a little too soon.

“New signing Alaw Enlli Jones’ clearance from the FAW is unlikely to come through in time.

“Hannah Owen pulled a hamstring during pre-season and has made an amazing recovery in time for this Sunday.”
