Asa Thomas makes surprise move from Bodedern to Trearddur Bay FC

One half of North Wales football’s most prolific goal scoring partnership last season has decided to move clubs.

Asa Thomas, who netted 58 times for North Wales Coast West Premier Division champions Bodedern Athletic in 2021-22 as part of a 126-goal double act with Marc Evans, has joined tier 5 club Trearddur Bay FC.

The 31-year-old Thomas, who has amassed a stunning 582 senior career goals, insists he has no qualms about dropping two levels on the Welsh pyramid.

He recently announced his intention to remain at Bodedern for the Anglesey side’s forthcoming campaign in tier 3 Ardal North West.

However, Thomas has also had a keen eye on the return of Trearddur Bay to senior football after a season’s break.

Renamed Trearddur Bay FC, the club will compete in the tier 5 North Wales Coast West Division One in 2022-23.

Thomas truly made his name at the Bay back in 2010-11, when he netted a phenomenal 112 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions for a team then known as Trearddur Bay United.

He later helped United win the tier 3 Welsh Alliance League title in 2015-16, scoring 48 goals.

The 58 he got last season was his highest number since that incredible 2010-11 campaign, in which Trearddur won four trophies.

Asa admits he leaves Bodedern with a heavy heart, but stressed tier 5 involves less travelling, which will fit in better with his new job.

“I have a new job where it would be hard to travel to the games and be there on time (in tier 3),” he said.

“Tier 5 will work round my shifts a lot better to be able to get to games.”

He added: “Bodedern are one of the best clubs I’ve ever played for; the fans were amazing, the committee members were amazing and the Ricky and Gus management team were second to none – Ricky is a top class manager who I thrived playing under.

“I hope they do well (in tier 3) and I will be keeping a close eye on it.”

Asa has also been impressed by the re-formed Trearddur’s pre-season progress under management team Nick Dumbarton and brothers Mel and Dan McGinness.

“I was always interested in Trearddur Bay once they started up again,” he said. “It will be nice to be back where it all started – back home.”

Trearddur Bay FC secretary Chris Davies said: “There’s a lot of good feeling at Trearddur Bay at the moment. We’ve been surprised with some of the players we’ve been approached by ourselves.

“It’s important that we stick to what we’ve set out to do though and bring through our youth. These experienced players who are coming in will only help them develop hopefully.”
