Dave Jones and the website Grassroots North Wales has been nominated for a special award.
The website, launched three years ago, has been placed in the Volunteer of the Year category for the FAW McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards 2022.
Dave, who spent more than 30 years as a news and sports reporter/editor for North Wales based media, went solo in 2019 to start his own website specialising in grassroots sport.
More than 1.5 million views and 5,000 + articles later, GNW is going from strength to strength.
Dave runs GNW on a voluntary basis and is backed by a small team of sponsors to meet site admin costs.
“The website is the best thing I have ever done in my career and the best thing I ever will do,” said the Holyhead-born writer.
“The only regret I will ever have is I didn’t take this path much sooner, but forward is the only direction in which I’m looking.”
The FAW McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards 2022 are at an early stage with Dave not yet knowing whether he will be invited to attend a regional ceremony.
After regional stages are completed, the national awards are announced at a grand ceremony in Cardiff later in the year.
Dave emphasised: “Just to be nominated is enough.
“There are so many amazing people all over Wales who give their services voluntarily, and I am sure many are far more worthy than I of winning an award.
“Just to gain a little recognition is ample for me.”
