Llanystumdwy end season in seven heaven

Llanystumdwy ended 2021-22 on a real high note

NORTH WALES WOMEN’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE – MAY 29, 2022

Llanystymdwy 7 (Wellings 10, 37 & 58; Mpuku 12, 44 & 55, Williams 60)
Northop Hall 1 (Evans)

Hana Wellings and Grace Mpuku both notched hat-tricks as Llanystumdwy ended their debut season in the North Wales Women’s League in fantastic style with a club record win.

Top-scorer Mpuku boosted her goals tally for the season to 13, while Wellings moved up to eight after Sunday’s heroics.

It was a second treble of the campaign for Grace as she also recorded the team’s first-ever three-goals-in-a-game feat in a 7-2 victory over Holywell last October.

Llan also completed a double over Northop Hall, having triumphed 3-2 at Rowley’s Drive in a thriller six months ago.

Sunday brought a fifth win of the season for the Dwyfor Park side and means they finish above the bottom three.

Llan’s final game of the season was a rearranged match from a month ago and for the home team it was well worth the wait.

They started the better team with strikers Mpuku and Ellie Williams high pressing the Northop defence from the first whistle and continuing this throughout the first half.

It did not take long for Llan to strike first with Wellings, in a central attacking midfield role, running at the defence and breaking through to go one-on-one with the keeper and slot home her first after 10 minutes.

Two minutes later Wellings advanced on the right side of the box and crossed the ball in for Mpuku to head home.

Northop did have a couple of half-chances, playing through balls between Llan’s defenders, but keeper Sara Lacey was on her toes to comfortably clear away any danger.

At the other end Llan were making it a hectic afternoon for Northop Hall keeper Bethan Thomas. Her best effort was an almost top corner save after an excellent shot from Wellings looked netbound.

Llan were knocking hard on the door for their third goal and it came in the way of another Wellings run through the defence and finish on 37 minutes.

Shona O’Brien could have made it 4-0 but her header from a Malen Williams corner was met by the crossbar.

Half-time: Llanystumdwy 3 Northop Hall 0

It took less than a minute for Mpuku to complete her brace, with a superb run onto a through ball before coolly slotting past the keeper’s right hand to make it four.

Northop were more attacking but still struggled to test the experienced Lacey.

Ten minutes into the second half, Mpuku left Hall defenders standing again as she completed her second hat-trick for the club.

Just three minutes afterwards Wellings celebrated her first treble with an excellent finish.

Ellie Williams got in on the scoresheet, finishing a move off with a sublime shot over the keeper’s head.

Northop did manage to pull a goal back when Chelsea Evans beat the offside trap to shoot past Lacey.

The visitors continued to press, but Llan defended brilliantly for the rest of the match.
