It’s a big welcome to the North Wales football family for Llanystumdwy women.
Plans to develop a ladies team in the village first emerged 12 months ago when local football enthusiast Maria Lloyd put out an appeal for players.
Plenty of hard work has gone on since then to build a squad, and the result was the team’s first friendly match on Sunday against mighty Bethel.
The final score was irrelevant – it was just great to see a new team out on the pitch.
As would be expected, the experienced and well-drilled Bethel side won comfortably, but Llanystumdwy produced a very encouraging performance, forcing the opposing keeper into a couple of fine saves.
Player-manager Maria said: “I was very pleased with their performance yesterday, especially because it was their first game.”
Llanystumdwy have been placed in the North Wales Women’s League Championship West Division for the 2020-21 season alongside Pwllheli, Penrhyn Bay, Caernarfon Town, Bangor 1876 and NFA.
The Championship East Division also comprises six teams, while the Premier Division is made up of seven members.
The top two teams in the East and West will clash in end-of-season play-offs to determine an overall district leagues champion.
Each team in the Premier will play 12 league games, with East and West 10 apiece.
Smaller divisions have been set up to help teams get all their fixtures finished in what will be a shorter season than usual due to Covid-19.
All we await now is a start date!
Llanystumdwy hope to organise another friendly very soon.
