Trearddur Bay FC bring an Ynys Môn legend on board for the 2022-23 season

One of the finest footballers to represent Anglesey has become part of the new coaching team at an island club ready to relaunch.

Mel McGinness joins manager Nick Dumbarton and younger brother Dan McGinness in the management set up at Trearddur Bay.

Bay are set to return to senior football in 2022-23 after a season out.

The club is reintroducing a men’s team as part of exciting plans to relaunch the club.

The rebrand will see Trearddur Bay Juniors, Trearddur Bay Ladies and Trearddur Bay United amalgamate under the one name of Trearddur Bay Football Club.

Experienced figure Dumbarton was appointed manager earlier this month. Both he and the McGinness brothers have vast football experience, chiefly as players, but also coaches, with the island’s highest-ranked club Holyhead Hotspur.

Mel McGinness is perhaps best known for scoring the winning goal for Ynys Môn in their 2-1 Inter-Island Games final victory over Guernsey in June 2019.

He was also the first-ever winner of the Bob Brodie Trophy, handed out every season to Anglesey senior football’s top goalscorer, in 2011-12.

That was the season Mel scored 50 goals as Hotspur won the Welsh Alliance League, Cookson Cup and Barritt Cup treble, as well as being FAW Trophy runners-up.

Mel, 32, is a Holyhead lad who signed for Bangor City as a 16-year-old in September 2006.

He was involved in the FAW Victory Shield Under-15 squad in 2004/05 and played in the unbeatable Holyhead Under-17 team of 2005/06.

Mel made his Bangor debut as a substitute in a 2-2 Welsh Premier League draw at Carmarthen Town on August 22. 2006.

He later represented Welsh Colleges and was named in Bangor City’s UEFA Cup squad.

However, first-team opportunities were limited at Farrar Road, and following a spell at Llangefni Town in 2008/09, the striker returned home to Holyhead Hotspur and was an outstanding success at the New Stadium.

Mel has also had spells with Gaerwen and Porthmadog, and in 2016/17, his hat-trick won Holyhead Hotspur the Welsh Alliance Reserves Division Lock Stock Fireworks Challenge Cup, as they thrashed divisional champions Bangor City 4-1 in the final.

On bringing Mel to Trearddur Bay, club secretary Chris Davies said: “We feel we have the right three people in place now to take the club forward. The three bring bags of experience at all levels of Welsh football and are well connected locally.”
