Anglesey football great Mel McGinness has stepped down as manager of Glantraeth and joined Holyhead Town as a player.

McGinness, 35, was unveiled as new Glantraeth boss in May, but left the Bodorgan-based club last week.

Tier 5 club Holyhead Town, who compete in North Wales Coast West Division One, announced they had signed the legendary goal-getter today.

McGinness was previously at Trearddur Bay, where he spent three seasons as part of the management team leading the Beach Boys up from Tier 5 to 3, winning the North Wales Coast West Division One and Premier Division titles along the way.

Before that, McGinness was best known for his great scoring feats with Holyhead Hotspur, where he netted 50 goals in the club’s Welsh Alliance treble-winning campaign of 2011-12.

McGinness has also represented Bangor City, Llangefni Town, Gaerwen and Porthmadog, and famously scored the winner when Ynys Môn won the 2019 Inter-Games Tournament on Anglesey.

Holyhead is McGinness’ home town.

The Harbourmen announced on their social media today: “Once the club were aware of his availability the club moved quickly to try to secure his services.”

Town’s management team for 2025-26 is David Jones, Dave ‘Ago’ Williams and Andy Will.

They said: “This is an unbelievable signing for the club to bring in a player of Mel’s calibre. Between Mel and Baz we feel that strike force could be the difference next season.  With the signings we have now made and the retention of players from last season the club is in a fantastic place.”

Holyhead Town recently announced the signings of striker Baz Haigh, midfield general Myles Jones, consistent goalscorer Jerome Sillence, Lewis Heywood, Elis Griffiths, Austin Lloyd Williams, Callum Edwards, Ryan Hughes and Callum Roberts.
