Veterans football – Ruthin Town close in on title

NORTH EAST WALES FOOTBALL LEAGUE VETERANS PREMIER DIVISION

Ruthin Town Veterans 6 (Porter 2, Evans, D Jones, Hughes, Roberts)
Caerwys Veterans 1 (T Jones)

Ruthin took a huge step towards securing the league title by beating rivals Caerwys 6-1 on Saturday.

Town now need just a point from their last two games to be confirmed as champions, with Caerwys only able to catch them up on goal difference.

Ruthin started brightly and put the Caerwys defence under pressure but without really testing the goalkeeper.

Against the run of play, Caerwys took the lead when a long distance effort from Terry Jones flew into the net.

Ruthin’s high pressure continued and resulted in an instant reply as Dan Porter picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area and blasted his team level.

A second quickly followed when Andrew Roberts burst down the left and cut inside and fired towards goal. The keeper made a save but Dafydd Jones was there to tap in the rebound.

Town could have added more but it remained 2-1 at the break.

The next goal was vital and it was Ruthin who got it in superb fashion. Porter won the ball in midfield and nut-megged a defender before curling a brilliant effort into the top corner from 20 yards.

It was now one-way traffic and Ruthin got a fourth when Ian Evans latched onto a through ball and made no mistake in slotting past the goalkeeper.

Caerwys’ frustrations then got the better of them as Terry Jones received his marching orders following a second yellow card.

Ruthin added two more as Elgan Hughes danced through the defence to add a fifth before Andrew Roberts completed the scoring with a low guided finish.

Next up for Ruthin is the league cup final this weekend.
