Ruthin booked a place in the final of the NEWFA Veterans Cup where they will meet either Lex XI or Hawarden Rangers.
Knowing they would face a hard semi at reigning Premier Division champions Caerwys, Town knuckled down to the task at hand and led at half time through an early goal from Andrew Roberts.
Caerwys had control over possession, however Ruthin always looked dangerous on the counter.
Roberts doubled the away total midway through the second half, which should have made things comfortable for Ruthin.
Typically, however, the always resilient Caerwys Vets had other ideas and piled on the pressure, scoring a well deserved goal to get them back into the match.
And they were unlucky not to get an equaliser
Against the run of play, Ian Evans settled the tie with a superb header, leaping like a salmon to end the game as a contest. It ended 3-1, but credit to Caerwys who fought until the end.
Elgan Hughes scored in the first half during a cameo appearance – his first in 2 months as he steps up his recovery from a torn thigh muscle.
Jordan MacCarter made it 2-0 in the second half before Buckley replied late on to create a nervous end to the match for Ruthin.
