Double joy for Bangor’s hockey ladies as they add cup victory to league title success

Da iawn Clwb Hoci Dinas Bangor.
Congratulations to Bangor City Ladies – winners of the North Wales Hockey League Cup for 2021-22.
The Citizens beat great rivals Pwllheli 5-1 in Saturday’s final at Eirias Park to complete the league and cup double.
It was the third meeting this season between the teams.
City had a full squad out but the occasion told a little on the players in the first half.
It felt like some time since Bangor had won the league and this was clear from how they started.

The first half was incredibly intense and kept the Citizens on their toes. Come the interval it was 1-1.
Although having scored a great goal through Lois Evans, Bangor still needed an extra boost to get ahead of the opposition.
On such a gorgeous day the heat had become a challenge to play in. However, a good talking to for the players from the coaches at half time worked.

The City girls came out fighting in the second half and started playing like their usual selves.
In the space of 10 minutes the score had gone up to 3-1 to Bangor, very important goals from Nia Culley and Lois Evans proving to be game changing.
With the scoreline to their advantage. Bangor grew in confidence, the game now in their hands.
Pwllheli battled hard, but Bangor took a huge step towards winning the cup when Jaqs Smith made it 4-1 from a penalty corner.
Still fighting, Pwll defended well but ended up conceding a final goal from City’s Mared Jones.

So a league and cup double for City, a great achievement for a team which has worked so hard and managed to get this far so quickly in spite of the problems caused by the pandemic.
These achievements highlight the exciting youth hockey that’s being developed at the club.
