Penmaenmawr Phoenix are the first-ever North Wales Coast Reserve League champions!

Meet Penmaenmawr Phoenix Reserves – the first-ever North Wales Coast Reserve League champions

Penmaenmawr Phoenix were crowned champions of the first North Wales Coast Reserve League following a 2-0 win at Llangoed and District Reserves on Sunday.

Morgan Roberts’ first half double sealed the three points and the first piece of silverware for Penmaenmawr’s reserve team since 1922 – exactly 100 years ago.

Perhaps understandably, Phoenix made a nervous start as they knew anything less than a victory at Tyddyn Paun would have meant the destiny of the title was out of their hands.

Pen eventually settled and began to play some eye-catching football.

In the 31st minute, some good build up play saw Peter Williams play the ball to Roberts, whose first time half-volley from 20 yards gave the home keeper no chance.

With 39 on the clock, Roberts won the ball on the edge of the area and from a similar position hit a fine strike into the top corner.

Half-time: Llangoed 0 Penmaenmawr 2

The second half was a cagey affair. With Llangoed having nothing to lose they threw everything at Pen, whose defenders stood tall and nullified the attacks.

In the 79th minute, Llangoed won a penalty, but Jonathan Sweetser-Hawkes saved superbly, plucking a David Parry kick which was heading for the top corner.

Job done and on the final whistle the celebrations began.
