WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE – MARCH 16, 2012
Prestatyn Town 0
Bangor City 4 (Sion Edwards 2, Chris Jones, Les Davies)
When both were in the Welsh Premier, Prestatyn and Bangor shared some great close battles – one derby which took place 10 years ago this week was not one of them.
City were reigning champions and going for back-to-back titles.
A convincing 4-0 triumph at Bastion Gardens put them top of the table.
Bangor had already beaten Prestatyn three times in the 2011-12 season – 5-3 in the last-ever game at Farrar Road, 5-0 at Bastion in the final fixture of the opening 22, and then 2-1 at Nantporth in the first match of the final 10.
This was the first-ever Welsh Premier encounter played at the all-blues’ new stadium on the outskirts of the city.
So Neville Powell’s men were going for a four-timer over the Seasiders. They had suffered back-to-back 3-1 home defeats to TNS and Neath (remember them?) so needed a tonic.
On a windy night at the Gardens, City attacked the social club end in the first period and enjoyed the backing of the strong blue following and stiff breeze.
A third corner on 19 minutes saw City go ahead as Chris Jones curled directly home from the flag kick on the left.
A minute before the break, the Citizens doubled the lead. Sion Edwards latched onto Lee Idzi’s long clearance down the left to smash a truly unstoppable volley beyond the despairing Jon Hill Dunt and into the far corner.
In the 63rd minute it was 3-0 as Sion Edwards released Les Davies, who ran down the left and smashed a low drive wide of the static stopper for his 16th goal of the season.
Davies had another ‘goal’ ruled out, but Bangor were not to be denied and a fourth duly arrived as Alan Bull fed Sion Edwards, who drilled home from the left.
