Jordan Roberts grabs late winner as Bangor 1876 overcome tough challenge of Amlwch’s women

Jordan Roberts scored the deciding goal just four minutes from time as Bangor 1876 became just the second team in the North Wales League to beat Amlwch this season.

Top-scorer Roberts made it nine goals for the campaign in a tough contest at a very blustery Plas Ffrancon in Bethesda.

The winner came after Lisa Thomas made a run into the box, committing two defenders and leaving Roberts free.

The ball deflected into Jordan’s path and she turned to hit it on the half-volley, finding the net to the left of keeper Ceri Pritchard.

Commenting on the win, 1876 manager Aron Griffith said: “It was end to end at times and especially in the rough conditions. Our overall game plan for the match panned out okay, even with the wind.

“It was game of relatively few chances, but I thought we looked the more likely, and had some decent chances but again the wind played its part. Credit to both teams they dug deep and adapted to the conditions to make a game of it.

“It was a competitive game throughout as we knew it would be against a strong team who’ve been flying in the league and haven’t lost for a long while, so pleased to come away with the points.

“Once we scored we shut up shop and managed the game out, but Amlwch pushed us all the way. We’re proud of the performance from the girls today, each and everyone of them.

“From our perspective we’ve got to keep up this level of intensity and performance going and take this momentum forward into our next match which will be another tough one, away to Welshpool next weekend.”

Amlwch put in their usual fine effort and were missing a few regular players, notably top-scorer Tesni Hughes, as well as Sara Furlong, Katie Lewtas and Kim Lodge.

For 1876, it was great to see Ceri Lois back on the pitch for the first time since November after a major operation. All went well for the lively striker, who came on for Awel Ellis in the second half.

Also a welcome face in the Bangor side was Charley Smith, featuring for the first time since joining the club from Llandudno as a player, although she had been part of the 1876 coaching set-up before that.
