Happy birthday to long-serving Llandudno player Sofie Owen

Several new players have featured for Llandudno during their debut season in the tier 2 Genero Adran North League, but some of the team’s loyalest servants still remain.

Sofie Owen falls into the second category. The first team captain turns 29 today having been born on February 21, 1993.

An attacking player and a consistent goalscorer for Tudno over a number of years, Sofie has always been respected for her competitiveness and 100% commitment to the game.

She began her career with Llandudno Under-13 girls and later represented the North Wales Coast in tournaments at Aberystwyth and on the Isle of Man, aged 15 and 16 respectively.

Sofie was later a regular for a Llandudno Junction senior side which became part of the Welsh Premier Women’s League and changed its name to Llandudno in 2014-15 as well as relocating to Maesdu Park.

In 2015/16, Llandudno reached the FAW Women’s Welsh Cup final for the only time in their history and Sofie was a key player that season, scoring 14 goals in total, including hat-tricks against Newcastle Emlyn and Cyncoed.

She has scored some cracking goals over the years, including a superb header for Junction against Caernarfon Town.

Captain, Claire Colville, crossed the ball in from the left and Sofie headed it over the keeper from the back post straight into the top-left corner.

Another belter came versus Caernarfon again, for Junction in the 2013-14 Welsh Cup. Sofie turned beautifully just outside the box on the left and struck a magnificent right footer beyond the keeper’s reach.

And in 2016-17 at Cardiff City, Sofie found the opposition net 17 seconds after the kick-off and without a home player touching the ball.

This time playing for Llandudno, a slick five-pass move ended with Kelsey Davies squaring to Sofie, who finished in style. A tremendous team goal.

Sofie remained a Llandudno player through some difficult and testing seasons in the Welsh Premier until the Seasiders resigned as the last surviving North Wales club in the top flight during 2019-20.

Under long-serving manager Sarah Colville, Llandudno are now rebuilding in the Genero Adran North and look to have a good chance of being crowned champions at the first attempt, although the likes of Wrexham and Connah’s Quay Nomads are big dangers.

Tudno have not applied for a Tier 1 licence for next season, so have no immediate ambition to rejoin the national league.

In the meantime, Sofie Owen is making good comeback progress this term after spell out through injury.

She is truly a Llandudno Ladies FC great with plenty of miles still left in the tank.

Happy birthday Sofie. 🎂🎂🍾🍾🥂🍬🍫🍪🌟🌟🌈
