Sofie Owen’s Sunday stunner was far from a one-off – looking back at some other top goals

Sofie Owen scored what must be a contender for goal of the season on Sunday.

The Llandudno captain hit a 40-yard stunner in her team’s 4-0 win at CPD Y Rhyl 1879.

It had to be an amazing strike to beat 1879 keeper Bethan Thomas, who was magnificent on the day.

Sofie, 30, is no stranger to netting spectacular goals, although Sunday’s effort surely must rank as one of the greatest of her career.

The Llandudno girl used to score numerous times when she played in an advanced role for a team she joined more than 10 years ago, but for the past couple of seasons, she has operated at the back.

It has done her no harm at all, as last year she was named in the JD Cymru North Team of the Season.

Here are some of Sofie’s other specials from over the years….

Header v Caernarfon Town (season unknown)

Sofie always recalls this one above all others.

Playing for Llandudno Junction (so it must have been 10 years ago or more), Claire Colville crossed the ball in from the left and Sofie headed over the keeper from the back post straight into the top left corner.

Right-foot belter v Caernarfon (2013-14)

Another cracker came versus Caernarfon again, for Junction in the 2013-14 Welsh Cup.

Sofie turned beautifully just outside the box on the left and struck a magnificent right footer beyond the keeper’s reach.

There is still footage of this game on You Tube. It’s a really nice moment at the end when Sofie hugs two small children, no doubt excited by her goal (those youngsters are probably 12 or 13 now).

Finishing off a passing move straight from kick-off v Cardiff City (2016-17)

This time a goal for Llandudno in the Welsh Premier Women’s League.

Sofie found the opposition net 17 seconds after the kick-off and without a home player touching the ball.

A slick five-pass move saw Katie Bowe deliver a beautiful ball out wide to Kelsey Davies, who raced into the box and squared to Sofie – and she finished in style. A tremendous team goal.

This one can also be seen on You Tube (link below). You only have to watch the first 30 seconds or so!

There will have been many more, but these are the ones which stand out for me.
