Happy birthday to a great keeper – Loz Jones

Happy birthday to CPD Y Rhyl 1879 goalkeeper Lauren (Loz) Jones – 26 today.

Born on January 16, 1998, Loz began playing football at a very young age and her junior teams included Rhyl Rockets and Kinmel Bay.

She stopped playing at the age of 14-15 due to back problems, but was able to return in 2017 to become goalkeeper for newly-formed side Rhyl Development.

Loz performed well for the team and went on to be part of the rebadged Rhyl Ladies in 2019/20, where she again excelled.

In 2021-22, Loz had her finest season yet when she kept goal for the CPD Y Rhyl 1879 invincibles which won the North Wales Women’s League.

Rhyl’s record that season was: Played 18 Won 16 Drawn 2 Lost 0 Goals Scored 118 Goals Conceded 13.

As well as standing out between the posts, Loz also benefited from having a brilliant defence in front of her and was always keen to acknowledge this.

Last season and this, Loz has shared the goalkeeping duties with Bethan Thomas as 1879 elevated and adjusted to the Tier 2 Genero Adran North League.

With Rhyl being new to the higher level they have at times suffered some heavy losses, yet very often Loz has come up with admirable goalkeeping displays to keep score lines respectable.

A tremendous shot-stopper, sound with her handling and offering quick distribution, Loz is a fine all-round goalkeeper.

She is also an inspirational character in the dressing room and a great supporter of the younger players at the club.

Much loved and much respected – happy birthday Loz!
