Colwyn Bay boss Steve Evans lands huge Welsh Cup semi-final date against old club The New Saints

Colwyn Bay manager Steve Evans

As a player Steve Evans won almost every honour available with The New Saints – but now he has to plot their downfall as an opposing manager.

Evans’ new side Colwyn Bay from the tier 2 Cymru North drew TNS in the semi-finals of the 2021-22 JD Welsh Cup tonight.

Seven-time Welsh Cup winners Saints will be strong favourites for next month’s last-four clash against a Bay team which has never reached the final of Wales’ premier knockout competition before.

Former Wales and Wrexham defender Evans, 42, who took over as Bay boss last month after reviving his playing career earlier in the season at Caernarfon Town, lifted five Welsh Premier titles and two Welsh Cups as a TNS player between 1999-2006 and 2009-17.

He later became assistant-manager at Park Hall.

Since become Seagulls boss Evans is unbeaten and has led the club to their first Welsh Cup semi since 1991-92.

Colwyn caused a major shock in Saturday’s quarter-final at Cymru Premier champions Connah’s Quay Nomads, another of Evans’ ex-clubs, with goals from Ryan Edwards and James Kirby leading the underdogs to a 2-0 win at Deeside Stadium.

In the other semi-final, Bala Town will face Penybont.

Ties are to be played at a neutral venue across the weekend of 18/19/20 March 2022.
