Flashback – February has not always delivered misery for Bangor City

February 18, 2022, will go down as a grim day in Bangor City’s history as they withdrew from the JD Cymru North League while under threat of expulsion over non-payment of debts.

However, on a happier note for past and current followers of the Citizens, this date (or the dates nearest to it) brought joy on the field for the club 5, 10, 15 and 20 years ago.

In a game of two halves, the Citizens had the wind in their favour in the opening period and led 3-0 at the break.
However, playing into the strong breeze in the second half, the hosts found life tougher and were left hanging on for the win.
Two classy finishes from Henry Jones, Gary Taylor Fletcher with both assists, put City into a two-goal lead, while young Dean Rittenberg notched his first goal for the club.
The students came on strongly in the second half, but despite goals from Elliot Evans and Dan Spencer, the blues emerged triumphant.

Then reigning Welsh Premier champions Bangor went four points clear at the top of the table after this deserved win at Maes Tegid.
City created the more chances throughout and only the heroics of Terry McCormick in the Bala goal saved his team from a heavier loss.
The deadlock was broken after 72 minutes. Dave Morley set up Mark Smyth to score from eight yards, his shot going in off Lakesiders defender Michael Byron,

Four months before taking over as manager of Bangor, Neville Powell brought his Connah’s Quay side to Farrar Road and finished on the wrong end of a 3-1 result.
Powell’s men led 1-0 at half time through an Adam Dickinson goal, but the Citizens turned the tables in the second period.
On 50 minutes, Ashley Stott was brought down in the box and Marc Lloyd Williams converted from the spot for his 20th goal of the season.
Before the hour, 16-year-old Holyhead lad Mel McGinness came on as a substitute for James Scales.
In the 62nd minute the hosts were 2-1 up when Lee Webber supplied the pass to release Mark Smyth, who outpaced the Quay defence to score.
Stott’s fine finish late on secured the points for Bangor.

City were always in command at Stebonheath Park.
Marc Lloyd Williams (2) and Kenny Burgess established a 3-1 lead at half time, Craig Draper replying from the spot.
Peter Davenport’s men netted three more in the second stanza, substitute Chris Boulton, Burgess and Paul Roberts on target, Leigh DeVulgt with a consolation for Llanelli.
