Happy birthday Marc Lloyd Williams – 49 today.

It is also 20 seasons ago since the prolific striker known as “Jiws” scored the most league goals ever in a single Welsh Premier campaign47 for Bangor City.

That total made him the highest scorer in all European leagues in 2001-02, but he did not win the European Golden Shoe. This was because the Welsh Premier has a lower coefficient than some of Europe’s bigger leagues.

In all competitions during 2001-02, Lloyd Williams amassed 66 goals for the Citizens in just 45 games.

Grassroots North Wales has published a number of celebratory articles on Jiws’ career, so today we do something different and relive the many highlights of that amazing season of 20 years ago.

Of course, Jiws is the Welsh Premier’s all-time leading goalscorer with 319 goals, as well as having netted the most in a single season with that 47 in 2001-02.

He has won the league’s Golden Boot twice – in 2001/02 in Bangor blue and 2004/05 while at TNS.

It is unlikely that figure of 47 will ever be matched or passed, not unless the league unearths another Jiws.

The nearest effort to Lloyd Williams’ best is the 43 pocketed by Dave Taylor of Porthmadog in 1993-94.

No-one has reached 30 Welsh Premier goals since Rhys Griffiths notched 30 exactly in 2009-10.

The 30-mark has never been managed since the league was reduced to 12 clubs in 2010-11.

THE 2001-02 SEASON

Jiws did not catch fire instantly in his most prolific-ever season.

He managed a not-too-shabby eight goals in his first nine league matches, but then really began to motor after hitting five against Cefn Druids.

In six league games between that 6-0 caning of Druids and a 3-3 draw with Caernarfon Town on Boxing Day, Lloyd Williams scored 12 times.

From the start of 2002, he was unstoppable, hitting another 40 goals across all competitions in just 22 starts for Peter Davenport’s side.

Jiws hit six goals twice – against Cardiff Civil Service in the Welsh Cup and away to Rhayader in City’s penultimate league match.

He TWICE put five past Cefn Druids, and banged in 13 goals in three meetings with the Ancients during the season.

Jiws scored against every team he faced in the campaign except Afan Lido and Newtown.

It was the season of all seasons for this legend of the Welsh game. Not surprisingly, he was named Welsh Premier League Player of the Year.

Penblwydd hapus – Happy birthday Jiws 🎂🎂🍾🍾🌟🌟🥅🥅
