Magic Morris is back at Ruthin Town – the club where he made his name

Ruthin Town are already having a great season in the Cymru North – now it has potentially got a whole lot better with the return of one of the club’s finest-ever strikers.

New Year’s Day signing Owain Llyr Morris is back at the Memorial Playing Fields after spells with Bala Town and Colwyn Bay.

And the 25-year-old admits he cannot wait to get back playing for the club where he made his name.

Morris was Cymru Alliance League top marksman while a Ruthin player in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

He had spent many loyal seasons with the club he joined at the age of 11, but was finally tempted to try his luck at a higher level when he signed for Bala in June 2020 ahead of their Europa League campaign.

Morris was in the Lakesiders squad for the 1-0 win in Malta against Valletta and 2-0 defeat to Standard Liege in Belgium, but did not get on the pitch.

Game time was limited at Maes Tegid for the former Wales Under-16 striker, an ex-pupil of Ysgol Brynhyfryd in Ruthin, so he switched to Cymru North club Colwyn Bay on loan in February 2021.

The move to Llanelian Road became permanent in June 2021, but Morris has decided the time is now right to return to Ruthin.

In an interview with CLIVE DAVIES on Ruthin Town’s social media today. he was asked why he left the club in the first place and joined Bala. The striker said: “When they came calling I thought it was too good an opportunity to turn down.

“I had some good experiences there, obviously Europe, and I saw the standard they play at the top of the Welsh Premier. It was a good experience, I learned a lot, but maybe I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did here.”

Similarly to the Bala experience, looking back Morris did not feel Colwyn Bay was quite right for him.

“It’s a big big club with a lot of history, the lads there were great, but I just don’t think I was at my best there, don’t know why.

“It just didn’t work out there, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. I had a chat with Philly (Hudson – Ruthin manager) about coming back here and decided this is where I want to be.”

Ruthin are currently fourth in the Cymru North and playing some outstanding football.

Asked what he feels he can bring to the team, Morris replied: “Playing as a striker, the main aim is to score as many goals as I can.

“I’ve been down here every weekend watching the lads play, I’ve also been going to watch them away. The way they play, it’s good to watch and I look forward to being a part of that and bringing something to that, whether it’s goals or whatever they need.

“I think they’ve (Ruthin) been excellent from the off. I played against them for Colwyn Bay at the start of the season and it was a real eye-opener, how hard they work on the pitch and you pair that up with the quality they’ve got as well, it clearly works for them.

“They’ve got some brilliant players, a lot of them I know and played with and some of the players they’ve brought in I don’t know.

“I think they’ve got everything they need to kick on and push further up the table before the end of the season.”
