Bangor City announce head coach Hugo Colace’s contract is terminated after club investigation

Bangor City have announced the contract of head coach Hugo Colace has been terminated after an internal investigation by the club.

The 37-year-old Argentinian joined the Citizens in January 2020, firstly combining a role as first-team player and co-ordinator of the club’s youth development centre.

In June 2020, Colace became first-team manager at Nantporth, taking over from Argentine World Cup winner Pedro Pasculli.

With the entire 2020-21 campaign cancelled below tier 1 in Wales, Colace’s job of trying to guide Bangor back to the Cymru Premier began in earnest this term.

Since the start of the current season in July, City have endured a nightmare time, currently lying a disappointing ninth in the Cymru North with a terrible disciplinary record including NINE red cards.

Coupled with off-field squabbles and uncertainty surrounding the club’s future, Bangor’s present situation appears gloomy.

Last week it was announced the club has been summoned to a disciplinary hearing over players’ and team officials’ wages not being paid.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the club released the following statement on social media: “Bangor City has decided to terminate the contract of head coach Hugo Colace following an internal investigation by the club.

“The conduct of Mr Colace has fallen below the standards that the club would have expected by failing to put the club first and his activities with third parties that have been uncovered.

“This comes along with the performances of the team that have not reached the standards required and a worrying disciplinary record.”

Colace has previously enjoyed a successful career playing in Argentina, Brazil, Italy and the UK, making over 100 appearances for Barnsley.

It is believed City’s new head coach is Cameroonian Mathurin Olivier Ovambe, also known as Matt, although the club has not put out a statement confirming this. However, Ovambe was listed as ‘team manager’ on Saturday’s official match sheet for the game at Conwy Borough.

Ovambe describes himself as Bangor’s head coach on social media, where he has published photographs of himself in club apparel.

The Cameroonian, now based in the Derby area, previously worked at Nantporth under Pasculli in 2019-20.
