Elwen Evans plays as a defender for Llangefni Town ladies.
She was a main driving force behind reforming a women’s football team in the Anglesey town earlier this year.
A great personality and a fine ambassador for her team and women’s football in North Wales, it is an honour to interview Elwen for our Female Focus feature.

How did you become interested in football?
My two cousins and uncle have always been into football and from a young age.
How long have you been playing football?
I started playing in primary school but never played for a proper team until Bangor U16’s because my mum and dad didn’t want me playing (they’re so supportive now – they just wanted me to do dance lessons instead).
Have you always played in the position you play now?
I’ve always played in defence but usually at right back this season. I’ve tried a couple of new positions – left back and I’ve tried the right wing. I think for now I’m going to stick to defence though.
What is your training schedule?
As a team we train every Thursday. I also like to go on an afternoon after work to have a mini session and to improve on my own weaknesses.
Do you practice every day?
I practice when I can after work but I’d say usually 2/3 times a week.
When you’re not working or playing football what do you do?
If I’m not playing football or working I’m usually with my family or watching Netflix
Do you like shopping? What are your favourite stores?
I do like to go for the odd shopping trip especially with my Nain. I love a good TK Maxx trip or B&M and Home Bargains. I love the odd bits and bobs shopping trip.
Which female footballer do you admire the most?
Away from football which sportswoman do you admire the most?
Emma Raducanu! What is there not to admire about her her first US Open tournament and she won! Just shows if you work hard enough you will succeed.
Which coach has influenced you the most?
She wasn’t a coach but it was my secondary school PE teacher Miss Gutteridge. She persuaded me to join a team and here I am today. Or at a close second my current manager Dan Gregg – he’s just a ray of sunshine and positivity that every team needs.
Do you have a favourite professional football team?
I’d probably have to say Spurs!
Do you stick to a diet?
I’d like to say I stick to a diet while training and playing but I’d be lying. I do like the odd healthy salad every now and again and try to eat healthy, but living so close to a Chinese and Indian is extremely dangerous 😂
What are your feelings on the women’s football pyramid changes in Wales?
I think it’s good that there’s a change now. We’re currently playing in tier 3 and there’s a huge range of teams and skills which makes it a great season for us to prove ourselves especially with so many new teams. I think it’s also made the transition for newer teams a lot easier too.
Are you in favour of an elite tier 2 north?
Yes. I think it’s good for the teams to have something to work towards and a clear goal. It’s something we as a club are hoping to be able to reach in a few years.
Tell us about the greatest ever game you’ve played in
It’s got to be Llangefni Town’s first ever game against Bangor 1876. That game may have been a 5-1 loss, however it just made me feel so proud starting that game as captain and seeing everything I’d worked so hard to achieve the past few months come alive.
Finest achievement as a player?
I wouldn’t really say I have a finest achievement to date but come back to me at the end of the season and I’m sure that will have changed.
Favourite all-time kit worn
Has got to be the new Llangefni Town kit! It just looks so smart!
What are your musical tastes?
Anything ABBA! It’s all I ever sing on karaoke. I’m also going to see them next August. Or Disney!
Do you watch TV soaps?
I don’t watch much TV really other than Gogglebox
Do you have any holiday plans?
I’m actually going to Majorca next August with my boyfriend’s family and I’m so excited.
Do you have any pets?
I’ve actually got 3, two cats and a dog called Gelert.
What is your dream job?
From a young age I’ve always wanted to work on aircraft and in the aeronautical industry which I have achieved and currently do full time.
What do you hope to achieve in the future?
I would love to get more girls into football and just promote the game more. I’d also like to just enjoy the game and play as many games as I can.
