Mini-previews of all 22 northern ties in the FAW Amateur Trophy second round

FAW AMATEUR TROPHY ROUND TWO – SATURDAY, AUGUST 7 (2 pm)
Bodedern Athletic v CPD Cefni
With new managers Graham Jones and Dan Richards at the helm, Cefni’s players will be going all out to make a big impression.
As Bodedern operate at a higher level and possess such a strong squad full of goalscorers, a home win looks favourite.
Athletic became even stronger in the week with the addition of midfield ace Jordie Murphy from Holyhead.
Brymbo v Rhostyllen
What a cracker in store between two teams both off to flying starts in tier 3 Ardal North West.
In the last round, Brymbo squeezed past Llanuwchllyn on penalties and it could go that way again against Rhostyllen, who proved in midweek they are never beaten with a dramatic league win at Llay Welfare while down to nine men.
Chirk Town v Cefn Albion
Another absolute scorcher of a tie in prospect.
Chirk Town have hit the ground running in the tier 4 North East Wales Premier Division, currently sitting top and unbeaten with 37 goals scored in their seven league matches to date.
But look at the opposition. Tier 3 Ardal North East Cefn Albion, winners of the FAW Trophy in 2018-19 and a massive hurdle for anyone to overcome in this competition.
Coedpoeth United v Llay Welfare
Good contest on the cards between tier 4 Coedpoeth, who whipped Mynydd Isa Spartans in the first round, and Llay Welfare, of tier 3, no doubt still feeling the pain of Wednesday’s last-gasp league loss to nine-man Rhostyllen.
Connah’s Quay Town v Halkyn and Flint Mountain
North East Wales League Championship side Town host Mountain from the rung above Premier Division.
Connah’s Quay are very capable of testing the best, while Halkyn and Flint Mountain have started the campaign well, lying third in the Premier.
Both lost in midweek in the NEWFA Challenge Cup – Town at home to Cefn Mawr Rangers and Mountain 3-2 at Greenfield.
Corwen v Chirk AAA
Will lightning strike twice?
Chirk won 5-0 at Corwen on Wednesday in an Ardal North East battle.
Can Corwen turn the tables after losing in such emphatic fashion to this opposition just three days ago? They have a quick chance to put things right, but Chirk are full of goals.
CPD Aberffraw v CPD Llannerchymedd
These two have already met in the Welsh Cup this season.
It ended 2-2 with Llannerchymedd winning 3-0 on penalties.
Another close tussle is expected.
CPD Bangor 1876 v Amlwch Town
Having already been expelled from the Welsh Cup for cancelling a tie due to Covid (ridiculous decision – GNW) Bangor 1876 will not want any mishaps in the Trophy against Amlwch.
The Anglesey side prevailed on penalties at the expense of Glantraeth in the last round, but should find the Treborth hosts much more difficult.
CPD Llannefydd v CPD Caer Clwyd
New side Caer Clwyd will be delighted to have progressed through a round of the FAW Trophy after winning at Bro Cernyw last time out.
Llannefydd will be boosted by their midweek league draw with CPD Y Rhyl 1879 and are favourites here with home and status advantage.
CPD Penrhyndeudraeth v Nefyn United
One of the ties of the round without a doubt.
Nefyn will be doubly determined to stay in the Trophy having been thrown out of the Welsh Cup for bringing on too many substitutes in a 3-1 “win” at Mountain Rangers.
The Penwaig top the tier 4 North Wales Coast West Premier Division with a 100% record of four straight wins.
Penrhyn also have a perfect slate of three wins in a row and lie third in the same division.
CPD Y Felinheli v Porthmadog
What a corking tie for Y Felinheli – home to the illustrious Porthmadog.
Both teams are in tier 3 Ardal North West and this should be another belting contest.
CPD Y Rhyl 1879 v Llanrwst United
North Wales Coast East Premier Division side Rhyl will fancy an early giant-killing when third tier Llanrwst visit Belle Vue.
The Rwsters have begun the season well, currently sitting second in Ardal North West.
Like many other ties, a hard one to predict.
Glan Conwy v Meliden
Meliden would do well to match their dramatic victory of the previous round over Llandudno Junction.
Glan Conwy will target a repeat of their 3-1 triumph against Abergele at the last stage.
Another one very close to call.
Llanfairfechan Town v Gwalchmai
Llanfairfechan have shown plenty of battling spirit in the early weeks of the season and they will probably need it again when a hard-working Gwalchmai visit the Rec.
Although the Anglesey side won 5-2 at Gaerwen in the last round, the statisticians took some time to acknowledge Gwalch as the progressing club.
Some still fail to do so, however we can confirm the Maes Meurig outfit WILL be facing Llanfairfechan.
Llangollen Town v Cefn Mawr Rangers
Rangers pulled off an upset in eliminating Penycae in the last round of the Trophy and after knocking Connah’s Quay Town out of the NEWFA Challenge Cup in midweek should be full of confidence for the trip to Tower Field.
Llangollen also beat the odds by seeing off tier 3 Rhos Aelwyd in round one, so they should also have plenty of belief in themselves.
Llansannan v Denbigh Town
With Denbigh having already scored 12 at Rhuddlan Town in the Welsh Cup, Llansannan would do very well to avoid an emphatic defeat at home to the third-tier visitors.
New Brighton Villa v Castell Alun Colts
NBV edged a 3-2 verdict at Hawarden Rangers in the last round, while Castell Alun walloped Lex XI 5-1.
The Yellers have won five on the bounce, one of those victories coming at Castell by a 1-0 margin in the North East Wales Premier Division.
Mold Alexandra v Greenfield
Greenfield are a good cup side, but will need to be at their very best to spoil the plans of an in-form Mold, who caned Airbus 5-1 in the NEWFA Challenge Cup in midweek.
Penmaenmawr Phoenix v Menai Bridge Tigers
Another which looks to have the making of a tight battle.
After exiting the Welsh Cup 8-2 at neighbours Bangor 1876, the Tigers will be keen to avoid a similar fate at Cae Sling, but the Phoenix are always capable of rising to the big occasion.
Prestatyn Sports v Llandudno Albion
These rivals have met a fair few times since starting out in North Wales football just a season apart back in the 2010’s.
Albion are now in tier 3 Ardal North West, with Sports in fourth-tier North Wales Coast Premier.
In first team meetings overall, Albion have won five, Sports two and there has been one draw.
Rhydymwyn v FC Queen’s Park
Hosts Rhydymwyn will be buzzing after winning their opening Ardal North West clash 2-1 against Brickfield Rangers in midweek, thanks to an injury-time decider.
Queen’s Park are a great cup side and if talisman Barry Torrence is on song, they could push Rhyd all the way.
Talysarn Celts v Mynydd Llandegai
After a fine 3-2 win over Pwllheli in the last round, Talysarn might back themselves for another surprise result at home to Llandegai.
However, the visitors edged through on penalties at Mountain Rangers in the last round and must have a decent chance against a team from a division below.
However, Celts are top of North Wales Coast West Division One and unbeaten.
Round two result from Friday, August 6
Bontnewydd 3 Nantlle Vale 0
