Awel Ellis hits four in 1876 win, hat-trick for Pwllheli’s Bowe

Awel Ellis struck four times for an 1876 side which continued their pre-season preparations with a convincing win at Bethesda yesterday.

After a third win on the bounce, manager Jonny Batten commented: “Thanks to Llanystumdwy on making the journey to Bethesda for the game. We appreciate the game and it’s great to be involved with a new team who are learning their trade.

“It was good to see us keeping up the momentum, it’s great to see players getting the opportunity to play and take their chances. George was brilliant today and Awel getting 4 goals shows how far she’s come along in a short space of time.

“Really pleased for Elin (Jones), a 16 year old with another player of the match display, that’s two in a row! That’s just fantastic and really shows her determination to get better and better.

“Results don’t matter; it was all about the performance and the team did well. Lots of positives from the match but also things to work on so we’ll keep training hard and try to keep the momentum going.”

Awel scored twice in each half, George Bain and Gwen Roberts both delivered doubles and there were singles from Jordan Roberts and Ffion Roberts.

Reflecting on the match, first team coaches Aron Griffith and Lois Regan said: “It was a superb performance from the team. Ideal to keep a clean sheet and to score double figures.

“The team played well, playing from side to side looking for the switch ball, which we have worked on in training. Really happy with the runs our strikers made today and our defence looked solid as well keeping the line and always covering. Great also for Becca (Elliott) to keep a clean sheet.”

Katie Bowe is showing the goal-finding form with which she has made her name in this pre-season for Pwllheli.

Bowe, who joined the Llyn club last season but never got to play a competitive match due to the campaign being cancelled because of Covid-19, is renowned for her past goalscoring feats with Caernarfon Town, Llandudno and Mountain Rangers.

In 2015-16, she netted 21 times for Welsh Premier side Llandudno, scoring a wonder goal in the Welsh Cup Final which ensured she became the first ever women to be nominated for Sgorio’s Goal of the Month.

She later went on to score seven goals on her debut for Mountain Rangers.

Against Northop Hall on Sunday, Bowe was on fire, one of her goals coming direct from a corner (one of her trademarks).

Also on target was the outstanding Lois Thomas.

Tier 2 North Pwllheli are in cracking form ahead of the new season.
