No youth football for 20 years in Brymbo – then the club land special junior award

Award-winning Brymbo Under-11’s

After 20 years of no youth football at Brymbo the club’s under-11’s team have just won a major award.

The young Steelmen picked up the Most Sporting Team accolade at the Wrexham & District Junior Football League AGM.

The award is voted for by fellow club members of the WDJFL and is a testament to the dedication, commitment, attitude, morals and the manners of our young players, coaching staff, supporters and committee members.

“We are immensely proud to receive this award in our first season back in the youth football league after 20 years,” said club general manager Chris Parry.

“What an incredible achievement in their first season by such a wonderful group of individuals and it’s those individuals that make this team a family.

“I’ve said numerous times, how much I’ve loved seeing the development of this group, not just in terms of ability but more so in terms of the friendships that have developed. In doing so it has created a fabulous family atmosphere.”

Chris added: “When Gaz Dugmore approached me in September 2019 and asked if he could start an under-11’s team, it became clear immediately that his philosophy was to build a team of ‘friends’ that could come and enjoy an organised game of football regardless of ability and I believe this award proves his method has worked.

“I would like to personally thank all of the players, Gaz, Chris, Gordon and Josh for their tireless effort and commitment on the pitch and to say a special thank you to Brymbo Youth secretary, Claire Williams.

“Without her dedication and effort off the pitch, a lot of what has been achieved would not have been possible. And last but by no means least, the parents, grandparents and families of all our players.

“I know how difficult it can be sometimes to commit to bringing the players to matches and training, whatever the weather and this award also highlights all of your efforts.”

Gaz Dugmore said: “I’m over the moon. It’s an incredible achievement from such a lovely group of kids. When I had the idea of starting this team, I didn’t want it to be about the winning, I wanted it to be about the enjoyment.

“A lot of the players didn’t even know each other at the beginning and it’s been amazing to watch them grow into footballers and become friends.

“We only had 9 players for our first training session but we finished the season with over 20 registered players. I’d like to think that’s because the kids are telling their other friends how much they enjoy it and they want to get involved too.

“The parents have been brilliant and the support from the club has been fantastic and now I can’t wait to move up with them to the U-12s and also develop our new under-8’s. I’d just like to say thank you to everyone involved. It’s a team effort.

“All at Brymbo Football Club are really proud of you and the players and we look forward to next season with the U-12’s and our new under-8’s.”

Under 8’s training is 11 am, every Sunday at The Crick, Brymbo Sports Complex, Heritage Way, Brymbo, Wrexham LL11 5TF.
