Defender Millie Sergent wants to keep testing her ability in boys team

Millie Sergent is an outstanding football prospect.

Playing for Kinmel Bay boys’ under-14 team, she performs consistently strongly as a centre back week in, week out.

Here, Millie talks to Grassroots North Wales about her career so far and ambitions for the future.

At what age did you start playing football and why did you start?

I started playing football at the age of 9. I have always been into sport and when my brother moved from Halkyn FC to Kinmel Bay Football Club I began to train with them and before I knew it I was playing matches with them.

What is your first football memory?

I was playing a match against Dyserth and I took control of the ball, shot from just past the halfway line and scored my first ever goal!

What was the first team you played for?

Kinmel Bay

What is your favourite position?

Centre back.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

My strengths: Strong in a tackle, comfortable on the ball, I like to pick out a good forward pass or set up a goal.
My weakness: over critical of my performances – it drives my dad mad.

What is the best game you have played in?

We got into a cup final against Prestatyn Tigers. We didn’t quite get a win but played like we had never played before against a load of academy players.

What has been the highlight of your football career so far?

I have won lots of trophies, but the two that mean the most to me was the time I won Managers’ Player and the Most Consistent Player.

I believe you want to keep playing in boys teams – why is this?

My aim is to compete at the highest level and I believe as much as the girls football has progressed I wanted to keep ahead so that when I have to move over to an-all girls league I can be the best that I can be.

Who are your heroes in the game – do you model your style of play on anyone?

My hero in football is Virgil van Dijk. I love that he isn’t the fastest player but he knows how to control the ball, pass and read the game very well. He is a strong ball playing defender who is a leader on the pitch

What are your ambitions as a footballer?

I want to take football on as a career, my dream would be to play professionally. Anything that involves football I would love whether it be coaching or playing.

“Millie is 14, plays centre-back and has been with me at Kinmel Bay since under-10’s. We will become the under-15’s next season and Millie wants to stay with us.

“She is a solid, old-style CB, no nonsense. She will clear the ball, the grass and the player 😂

“She has recently started to help Frank (Standing) out with his girls team as they are moving to U14’s next season.

“Millie reminds me of Duncan Ferguson and must be the toughest player on the team – if she gets smacked in the head she just shakes it off and carries on.”
