The girls of Syr Hugh Owen rejoice after winning the Under-15 Welsh Cup

Four years ago today the girls of Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, Caernarfon were crowned Welsh Schools FA Under-15 Cup winners 2016/17.

Taking on Ysgol Glantaf, Cardiff, at Park Hall, TNS, Syr Hugh were involved in a 1-1 draw before the match went to penalties and Jennah Williams’ decisive kick in sudden death secured the trophy.

Captain Jody Cain led her team out of the tunnel to the Champions League theme and they then lined up to sing the national anthem before the game.

It was a fairly equal first half, Anest Roberts hitting the crossbar twice for Syr Hugh and Catrin Williams producing some great saves to stop Glantaf from going ahead.

Syr Hugh were on fire after half time. A throw-in from Jessica Lane landed at the feet of Anest Roberts, who turned into the box and placed the ball nicely in the corner of the goal to put the Cofis ahead.

The North Walians had a few more chances to seal the victory, but a last-minute break against the play saw Glantaf plunder an equaliser.

A 1-1 score meant it went straight into penalties, which stood at 5-5 before Glantaf missed and Jennah Williams kept her nerve to convert the winning kick.

Gofal Bro sponsored the team’s kit for the occasion.

To reach the final, the girls won their local round and went through to represent Eryri in the Welsh Cup.

They beat Ysgol Darland away in Wrexham 4-2 before defeating Ysgol Llanidloes 3-1 on penalties in the quarter final after a 3-3 draw.

A home draw in the semi-final against Ysgol Penweddig and a penalty from Anest Roberts ensured a 1-0 win.

Squad: Jody Cain (capt), Jessica Lane, Kasey Allsup-Davies, Erin Allen-Jones, Cara Jones, Catrin WIlliams, Elli Johnstone, Anest Roberts, Nel Jones, Malan Hughes, Cara O’Neill, Jennah Williams, Erin Evans, Betsan Roberts, Erin Williams.
