Five years ago this weekend Llanrug extended their unbeaten run to 12 games with an emphatic but hard-fought 4-1 win at Eithin Duon against a spirited Abergele.

United got off to a fine start, youngster Luke Phillips and midfielder David Noel Williams combining well to set up striker Alan Mark Owen, who rounded the advancing goalkeeper to slot into the back of the net on six minutes.

The home side’s joys were short lived as Gele struck back after nine minutes, Daniel Abbott heading home from six yards out following a free kick.

‘Rug regained the advantage four minutes from the interval, midfielder Carl Griffiths with an excellent low cross from the right for Luke Phillips to apply a fine finish.

Half-time: Llanrug 2 Abergele 1

A competitive second half saw the home team finish the stronger and on 80 minutes, full-back James Phillips fed a superb ball to the feet of striker Alan Mark Owen, who beat a defender with ease and fired a powerful low drive across the goalkeeper into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

In the final minute, a well-driven corner kick from the left via Marvin Pritchard was met beyond the far post by Alan Mark Owen, whose powerful header flew into the opposite top corner for a deserved hat-trick and the Man of The Match award.

A superb performance by United with the whole squad contributing.
