Tough start for Chirk’s cricketers at hands of St Georges

A Chirk team photo from last season

Chirk 1st XI endured a tough start to the 2021 season in Shropshire Cricket League Division One on Saturday when they crashed to a 181-run defeat against a very strong-looking St Georges side.

The North Wales team perhaps ill-advisedly put the visitors into bat after winning the toss.

The result was a mammoth total of 319-7 from the Shropshire outfit.

However, things did start well for Chirk, with all-rounder Andrew Swarbrick taking three early wickets as St Georges slumped to 17-3 and then 68-4.

It was here the tables turned as Stephen Taylor (113 not out) and Lewis Sedgley (97) put on 126 for the fifth wicket.

Josh Sedgley added 54 as the sixth wicket pair delivered another 93 runs.

Andrew Swarbrick collected 4-71 and Luke Gardner 2-106 off 14 expensive overs.

In reply, Chirk could only muster 138 all out, Mark Shaw performing best with the bat, the wicket-keeper finishing 50 not out, while Stephen Taylor completed a remarkable match for the hosts by taking 5-20 off 14 overs to add to his unbeaten ton. To wrongly quote Del and Rodney Trotter…he will have worse days.

Points 24-5 to St Georges.

Chirk 1sts visit Pontesbury this Saturday.

This season the league has been revamped to involve eight Saturday and two Sunday divisions.

Chirk 2nds will play in Division Seven and start their season at Cae Glas 2nds on May 8.
