Llangefni Town Football Club have announced they will run a women’s team in the 2021-22 season.

They will become the third ladies side operating on the island of Anglesey alongside Amlwch Town and Trearddur Bay.

Amlwch Ladies have been in existence for a number of years and are now at their strongest, having won the North Wales League Division Two title in 2019-20.

Trearddur have only played at recreational league level so far, but have certainly shown some promise.

They are currently preparing training sessions for the weeks ahead and would welcome more player interest.

Amlwch have applied to play in Tier 2 North in 2021-22. Twelve North Wales clubs have been successful in their first stage applications, but a third will miss out as T2 North will be an eight-team league.

There will be a Tier 3 local league (or leagues) for North Wales too, although the precise details are not yet known.

New Llangefni team main organiser and player Elwen Evans said: “It’s great to have another ladies team on the island to help grow women’s football in the local area.

“All of the ladies are very excited to be a part of such a historic club like Llangefni Town. We can’t wait to get started when restrictions allow.”

Llangefni have run a number of successful girls teams over the years, so the pedigree is there to develop something special.

Female football in general on Anglesey is thriving, the Ynys Mon women’s team having reached the final of the International Inter-Island Games in 2019.

Despite this, at club level only Amlwch have consistently been able to field a women’s team on Anglesey over the years.

Teams representing Holyhead, Benllech, as well as Llangefni some years ago, have been tried, but were short-lived ventures.

Anyone wishing to sponsor Llangefni Town women can contact the club through any of its social media platforms, such as Twitter: @LlangefniTownFC
