Flashback – 20 years ago: Bangor relieved to take point from Port Talbot

Port Talbot 2 (Brain 47, Ryan 60)
Bangor City 2 (Roberts 15, Giggs 30)
League of Wales – April 21, 2001

Twenty years ago today Bangor led 2-0 at half time but were hanging on by the final whistle to take a point from Port Talbot.

City opened the scoring on the quarter hour. Marc Lloyd Williams ran to the right side of the box, Gareth Scantlebury half-saved his low shot which ran for Paul Roberts to tap into the empty net from close range.

On the half hour mark Rhodri Giggs doubled the advantage with a super goal.  Again Lloyd Williams was in the thick of the action. The ball broke for the winger who lifted a superb effort over and slightly wide of the despairing Scantlebury from some 25 yards.

City also had Sean Hazelden and Richard Owen yellow carded whilst scoring both goals.

The travellers had the bulk of possession but could not increase their lead and went in 2-0 ahead.

Half-time: Port Talbot 0 Bangor City 2

A very different second half as the home side took over and reduced the deficit within two minutes through David Brain whose powerful header beat Paul Evans.

Port Talbot drew level on the hour mark thanks to a well-struck shot from half time substitute Richard Ryan but then failed to secure the winner their dominance deserved.

Giggs was yellow carded as City endured periods of pressure; with five minutes remaining Craig Roberts replaced the tiring Richard Owen.

Overall a point could make the difference in the battle against the drop; a much better performance from keeper Paul Evans.

Bangor City: Paul Evans, Steve Cooper, Clayton Blackmore, Sean Hazelden, Clive Brown, Richard Owen, Marc Lloyd Williams, Mark Thomas, Rhodri Giggs, Paul Roberts, Aled Rowlands. Subs: Craig Roberts, Ian Burgess, Terry Boyle.
