Green, global challenge from ‘Dawn to Dusk’

Helen Hannam of North Wales Road Runners

Relay teams of North Wales based runners, walkers, and cyclists are preparing to take part in an unusual ‘Dawn to Dusk’ green, global charity challenge this Saturday to see how many kilometres they can complete within a 12-hour period.

A number of targets have been set for each of the different activity sections, offering branded coloured wristbands, and beautiful natural wooden eco medals to finishers, along with spot prizes and special awards to category winners.

The object is to find the teams who can complete the longest distances worldwide with donations given to Mind, Sporting Equals, or NHS Charities.

All finishers will also have the option to collect a special medal with an Ultra X logo in the centre, and/or to make an additional donation to the organiser’s sustainability partners, Mossy Earth, who will plant a tree in their name in the Southern Carpathians.

Teams are to consist of three participants working in four-hour shifts, including all male, all female, or a combination of genders. And entrants will need to complete their challenges between 6am to 6pm, ‘Dawn till Dusk’ with the overall distances measured by the totals recorded by all three team members.

Several North Wales athletes are taking part in this unusual endurance challenge including Helen Hannam, with Lucy Healy from Criw Colwyn, and her friend Hayley Jones, in addition to other local teams with GOG’s Sarah Tuck, and Hayley Price-Jones, who intend to run around the Great Orme. Other members of the GOG’s, NWRRC, together with many local entrants, are also expected to participate.

Helen, from NWRRC, who has been training hard for the event, intends to run part of her challenge to and from Penmaenmawr with club colleague Hannah Griffith, explained: “I plan on walking a bit as well as running, and I’m aiming for about 20-miles at 5mph, which is do-able. I am not fundraising but gave a donation to Mind when I entered.”
