Big early test for new Sunday football team The Millbank

The Millbank in action on Coronation Gardens, Rhyl

Newly-formed Sunday team The Millbank have a big test coming up this weekend.

The Rhyl side will host the mighty FC Mally of Llandudno Junction in a friendly at Coronation Gardens on Sunday, kick off 12 noon.

Mally are three-time quadruple winners in the Rhyl and District Sunday League, so Millbank will be given an early indication of the quality of opponent they will face this season.

Millbank manager Liam Groves said: “We are a new team formed officially in January of this year. Unfortunately due to Covid we haven’t had the ideal start to our season and preparations are still ongoing to get our season started.

“The idea stemmed from a group of childhood friends (now in the age range of 23/24) always talking about how since juniors we haven’t had a team we all played together in.

“That’s where I decided on January 8th whilst having birthday drinks in the pub that I was going to start the team, manage the team, arrange all finances for the club which are self-funded and ultimately get together a list of players that would want to relive the old days.

“This is perfect for me as I’m looking to take my first managerial steps. This will give me the perfect base platform to complete my coaching badges when possible.”

So far, Millbank have a record of two wins and one loss in their three friendlies.

Last Saturday they defeated FC Prestatyn 8-2 with goals supplied by: Joel Poh (3), plus one apiece for Paul Ham, Lewis Jenner, Caz Gordon, Lewis Hensey and Alex Hall.

Ham is not THE Paul Ham who starred for Rhyl Delta in the 1990s. Paul Ham who plays for Millbank is 24 and very much the target man of the team.

The current Millbank squad comprises:
Liam Groves – manager
Wil Roberts – assistant manager
Ben Spencer
Paul Ham
Nathan Jones
Bobby Hall
Ashley Randles
Lewis Jenner
Liam Grayson
Aaron Martin
Alex Hall
Jordan Cemaloglu
Ben Edge
Joel Poh
Jacob Parry
Joseph Williams
Jay Hughes
Luke Davies
Jordan Cairns
Lewis Hensey
Jack Standish

Manager Groves added: “We are looking forward to Sunday as it will no doubt be our toughest test to date. Our record is currently 2 wins and 1 loss so confidence and morale is high in our camp.”
