Flashback: Remembering the Prestatyn Town invincibles of 2005-06

Prestatyn Town captain David Hayes lifts the Welsh Alliance League championship trophy following a 2-0 win over Rhydymwyn on April 19, 2006

This season marks the 15th anniversary of a campaign where Prestatyn Town achieved immortality.

Back in 2005/06, the Seasiders produced what will forever be statistically the greatest-ever performance in a single season by a club from either the now dissolved Welsh Alliance League (1984-85 to 2019-20) or its predecessor competition the Welsh League North (1935-36 to 1983-84).

While five teams in the 85-year history of the two leagues went through an entire season unbeaten, Prestatyn’s 30-game undefeated streak in 2005-06 stands as the best feat of all-time.

With the Welsh Alliance now defunct and replaced by the tier 3 Ardal Northern, Town’s record of invincibility will never be beaten.

This was the season where Prestatyn’s remarkable rise to prominence really began.

Dave Fuller’s marvels did not endure a single loss in a magnificent league campaign which produced 25 wins and five draws with 114 goals banged in.

The Seasiders’ journey to the title included a reported club record 14-0 demolition of Cemaes Bay.

Steve Bowes and Jon Fisher-Cooke provided a huge chunk of the goals, but other top players such as Dave Hayes, Neil Gibson and Jack Lewis played a major role.

The club elevated to the Cymru Alliance in 2006-07 and they won the title the following season in Gibson’s first campaign in charge.

Then came seven seasons in the Welsh Premier, as well as Welsh Cup and European glory before another CAL championship in 2016/17.

One more season in the WPL was followed by a third CAL (Cymru North) title in 2019-20.

But the amazing story of Prestatyn Town’s journey to glory all started with the 2005/06 invincibles.

CLOSEST TO A LOSS

Away to Llanrwst on March 18, 2006, Prestatyn were 2-1 down with five minutes left – the Rwsters having missed a spot-kick.

The hosts then conceded a needless penalty which Town converted and in the protests that followed Llanrwst had three players sent off – and another after the final whistle.

Prestatyn then sneaked a last-gasp winner.

In their very first game, Prestatyn let in an injury-time equaliser against Conwy United, who then nearly snatched it when they struck the bar moments later. So it could have been all over before it started.
