Welsh Premier League – Oct 29, 2010

Ten years ago this weekend Bangor City failed to hit the heights against a battling Bala but still had enough firepower to register a dozen straight league wins and go 16 points clear at the top of the table.

Such was the standard City had set this season, a 3-0 verdict was recorded without the fluency fans had come to expect, but they were rarely troubled although the visitors did rattle the woodwork late on and a superb Paul Smith save ensured a Bala blank.

Buoyed by a backing wind in the first half, it became route one stuff for most of Town’s game plan with willing front runners in Michael Thompson and Chris Mason marshalled well by the City back four.

However, for all their possession and dominance, City were unable to create many first half openings as Colin Caton’s side hassled and harried.

In fact, the Maes Tegid men could have embarrassed the hosts when an offside-looking Thompson broke clear on 13 minutes only to lose control of the ball 15 yards out.

City struck on 22 minutes when Chris Jones played in Jamie Reed at the edge of the box and he duly slotted the ball past keeper Leon Bimpson from seven yards.

The visitors responded with several long range efforts, the tricky John Irving firing over from 20 yards, while Smith was relieved to see a Steve Morrison piledriver narrowly miss the target. Thompson was inches wide from 25 yards on the stroke of half time.

Half time: Bangor 1 Bala 0

The Citizens began the second half with a bang and Alan Bull set up Nicky Ward from the kick off, but the midfielder miskicked eight yards in front of the inviting goal, before Reed’s header from Ward’s free kick rebounded off the upright.

Bimpson did well to save from Reed after being pressed by Les Davies following a long clearance from Smith.

City doubled their tally on 63 minutes when Davies put in Chirs Jones on the left of the box and he rounded Bimpson before sliding the ball goalwards for Reed to touch home.

Still Bala remained defiant and refused to lie down with Paul Ennis denied by the bar with a 20-yard angled effort a minute later and then forced Smith into a superb save, the home keeper pushing a vicious long-ranger over the bar.

City were guilty of sloppiness at times, but Ward put the result beyond any doubt on 77 minutes with a screamer from 25 yards that left Bimpson grasping thin air as the ball hit the top left corner.

Bala nearly had the final say at the death when Danny Williams put a glancing header just wide from a corner from sub Rob Evans, but it was Bangor who took the spoils despite not really hitting top gear.
