Ten greatest North Wales women’s goals I’ve ever seen

Prestatyn Girls celebrate a goal in the 2014-15 FAW Under-16 Welsh Cup Final. Ashleigh Mills is just in the background about to join her joyous team-mates

These are the 10 greatest goals I’ve ever seen scored by North Wales women footballers.
There may have been better ones out there, but I’ve never seen them.

10 LAURA WILLIAMS (RHYL 3 Caldicot Town 3 – Welsh Premier League, January 28, 2018)

Laura Williams takes a corner

Cracking end-to-end game at Belle Vue saw Laura tee up the ball on her left foot and glide an absolute beauty into the top corner from about 25 yards.

Laura has always been capable of magic moments like this.

9 SOFIE OWEN (LLANDUDNO JUNCTION 1 Caernarfon Town 2 – Welsh Cup second round, November 17, 2013)

Sofie has scored some crackers in her career but surely few better than the one v Caernarfon in 2013

Caernarfon advanced to the Welsh Cup quarter-finals at Victoria Drive, but Junction certainly provided the best goal of this second round tie.

Sofie Owen turned beautifully just outside the box on the left and struck a magnificent right footer beyond the keeper’s reach.

8 LEXI CRAWLEY (NFA 0 AMLWCH TOWN 9 – North Wales League Division Two, September 8, 2019)

Goal machine Lexi fired in a real belter at Rhyl

A really stunning strike from the prolific Lexi Crawley saw her let fly from about 25 yards with a shot that crashed in off the bar like an Exocet missile.

Lexi scored a hat-trick for an Amlwch outfit which proved far too strong for newcomers NFA on the opening day of the season.

7 ASHLEIGH MILLS (PRESTATYN GIRLS 4 Coed Duon Dragons 0 – FAW Under-16 Welsh Cup Final, May 10, 2015)

Ashleigh (back row – third left, first girl) celebrates winning the Welsh Cup with Prestatyn on the podium

A magnificent performance from the all-conquering Prestatyn side at Latham Park, Newtown, featured two stunning goals from the lethal left boot of Ashleigh Mills.

The first one, a dipping effort from 25 yards, was a pearl but some fault could have been pointed at the keeper.

However, Ash’s second – and my choice at No 7 – was an absolute screamer from the left-hand side which no keeper could have stopped.

6 RACHEL LLOYD (RHYL 1 Cardiff City 5 – Welsh Premier League, Dec 11, 2016)

Rachel (white) lashed in a stunner against Cardiff City

What a strike this was.

Paige Williams produced some silky skills down the left and passed to Lloydy, who pushed the ball forward and sent a beauty into the top corner from about 25 yards.

5 KATIE BOWE (LLANDUDNO 4 Rhyl & Prestatyn 0 – Welsh Cup, Oct 18, 2015)

Katie Bowe (stripes) in action during the 2015-16 season where she scored 21 goals

The 13th minute proved unlucky for the visitors as Katie Bowe put the hosts on their way to victory with the most amazing of goals.

This player always specialises in long range crackers anyway, but this one was a bit special as she launched a 35-yard thunderbolt which gave keeper Megan Roberts not a hope.

4 AMY WEBSTER (Llandudno 8 RHYL 2 – Welsh Premier League, April 26, 2016)

Amy’s rocket was unstoppable

This was only a consolation goal for the visitors, but what a goal from our Amy.

The game was not far from the final whistle and everyone was getting ready to depart when Ams hit an absolute belter with her left foot which flew in under the bar.

3 LEONIE PRYTHERCH (Rhyl Development 1 BETHEL 3, North Wales League, May 10, 2018)

I was in a perfect position to see Leonie’s strike and I was calling ‘goal’ before it hit the net

The match was well-balanced at 1-1 when Leonie Prytherch hit an absolute screamer from 35 yards to put Bethel in front on 63 minutes.

It was an unbelievable strike which sparked wild celebrations – a goal from the instant it left her right boot.

Sioned Phillips added her second of the game after 79 minutes to seal an away win.

2 CERYS GADD (Point 1 AMLWCH TOWN 3 – March 13, 2016)

Photo of Cerys (blue) from the game (I think) where she scored her wonder goal

Amlwch’s third goal from Cerys Gadd was something to behold.

Cer broke the deadlock when she passed four Point players before her effort from the corner flag flew straight into net for 1-0.

Chloe Taylor doubled the score when she finished off a smart dribble with a fine shot.

The third away goal was something very special.

Cer turned sharply and scored with a magnificent long range strike which flew into the net from all of 40 yards or more.

This goal was caught on video by Sara Furlong.

1 ASHLEIGH MILLS (Cardiff City 5 RHYL 1 – Welsh Premier League, April 23, 2017)

Ashleigh (white) was Beckham-esque in the execution of her goal from the heavens at Leckwith Stadium

Amazing goals have been a feature of Welsh international Mills’s career, but the one she scored at Cardiff City was something truly out of this world.

Rhyl trailed 1-0 when Ashleigh was gifted the ball in the centre circle and lobbed the keeper with a magnificent precision effort.

Such confidence, such execution, simply the best.

Goals 10, 9, 7, 6, 2 and 1 are available on You Tube with a bit of searching.
