Sion Tudor Jones steps down as Corwen manager

Corwen manager Sion Tudor Jones has stepped down, it was announced this evening.

Jones has left the Cymru North club due to family commitments.

He took over at the War Memorial Ground in October 2019. Corwen ended the curtailed 2019-20 campaign next-to-bottom of the table.

A Corwen spokesman said an announcement on Jones’ replacement would be made in due course, adding: “Although the club is disappointed to see Sion go we would like to thank him for his hard work during his time in the role and we would like to wish him all the best in the future.”

Jones gave the following statement: “It is with regret that I have decided to step down as manager of Corwen FC.

“Although a difficult one, it is the right decision for me personally as I have struggled for a long time to keep a healthy balance between managing and family commitments.

“When I took over in November, I was aware of the task ahead but I’d like to think I gave the club the commitment and hard work it truly deserves.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t complete the season as I felt we were improving both on and off the pitch, however, I appreciate and respect the FAW’s decision to void the season under the current circumstances.

“I’d like to thank all the players and management team for adapting to my way of managing and also for their hard work and commitment during my short spell at the club. I think I speak on behalf of them all in thanking those who have supported the club both home and away throughout the season.

“Lastly, I’d like to thank the committee. They gave me the opportunity to manage the club and they have been supportive throughout. I hope the people continuously driving the club forward behind the scenes are rewarded for all their hard work.

“I wish the club all the very best for the future. Diolch yn fawr,”

As a young player Sion represented Corwen and Bala and also spent two seasons with Chester City. Due to serious injury problems his playing career came to an end when he was 26.

He also had a season with Ruthin Town in the Cymru Alliance, before several successful years managing Bala Town Reserves together with Andrew Parry.

Sion later managed Llanuwchllyn, taking the club into the WNL Premier Division, where they came close to gaining promotion to the Cymru Alliance.

In 2018, he joined Porthmadog as coach and assistant-manager to Craig Papirnyk, then took over at Corwen eight months ago.
