Evans above! This North Wales women’s XI would take some stopping

Welcome to part seven of a series where we choose what we consider are the best XI’s in North Wales women’s football according to their surnames.

We will restrict selections to the North Wales Women’s League, Welsh Premier, North Wales Recreational League and great past North Wales teams such as Bangor City, Caernarfon Town and Llandudno.

We’ll avoid girls playing in English teams as there are so many of them, it is not that easy to find details on where all of them play, and there is always the risk of leaving out a top player.

There is less chance of that happening with the leagues I am picking from – I’ve never claimed to know everyone or everything!

So far we have selected a Thomas XI, Williams XI, Jones XI, Hughes XI, Davies XI and Roberts XI.

Today we present the Evans XI to impress you.

GOALKEEPER

Alice Evans

Okay we kick off with a bit of rule-bending.

Wales keeper Evans was born in Aberystwyth, but when the Welsh Premier was split into a north and south conference, from 2009-12, Aber were regarded as a northern team.

So I’m allowed to pick Alice (I couldn’t find an Evans keeper playing in the North Wales League). It’s my game and if I can’t choose her I’m taking the ball home.

Former Cardiff City, Yeovil Town and Bristol City stopper, quality keeper.

DEFENCE

Becky Jarvis-Evans

Solid defender who gathered plenty of Welsh Premier experience with Llandudno before joining North Wales League Division Two newcomers Connah’s Quay Nomads this season.

Ffiôn Evans

Eighteen-year-old youngster in a promising Corwen side full of youthful talent. Usually plays left back, or sometimes left wing.

Ffion is a diminutive but strong player, always determined to win the ball back.

Heledd Evans

Soon to begin a career as a nurse in our marvellous NHS.

Heledd, 21, has a great football background which includes being part of the Caernarfon Under-16 side which won the quadruple in 2013-14, including the coveted Welsh Cup.

Defender Heledd progressed to the Caernarfon Town senior side, winning the North Wales League title and cup double in 2016-17.

Now part of the progressive Mountain Rangers team.

Chloe Evans

Social media star who has made a good impression playing at the back for newly-formed NFA this season.

Never stops running, always ready to put in a firm tackle and join the attack when possible.

Sister of former Prestatyn Town and Rhyl winger Dan.

MIDFIELD

Amelia Evans

Corwen prospect Amelia, 18, usually plays right wing, but can also play on the left and at full back if needed.

She’s quick down the wing and can put a great ball into the box. 

Also capable of scoring stunning goals.

Samantha Jarvis-Evans

Represented Llandudno in the Welsh Premier for a number of seasons because the team resigned this term.

Classy midfielder, good on the ball, grew into her role and became a regular for Tudno.

Has now joined Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Angharad Evans (Bethel)

Lively and hard-working midfielder, skilful. 

Was in the Ynys Mon squad which reached the Inter-Island Games final last year.

Angharad was part of the Bethesda team which won the Division Two title last season and before that turned out for Bangor City.

Chelsea Evans (Northop Hall)

Usually a right-midfielder, but can also operate on the left.

Played for Mostyn Dragons and Blacon Youth Girls before beginning her association with Northop Hall Ladies.

Won the North Wales League and NEWFA Cup double with the Hall in 2017-18.

Chelsea is part of a long-standing football family. Granddad Robin founded Glantraeth FC, dad Paul played for many sides on Anglesey and brother Ethan is a promising young player.

FORWARDS

Ffion Evans

Has netted eight goals in all competitions for a much-improved Penrhyn Bay side this season.

Sharp, decisive striker who is proving she knows where the goal is.

Catrin Evans

Aged just 17, Anglesey-based Catrin has stormed onto the North Wales senior football scene over the past two seasons.

Last season, she bagged 18 goals in 12 games for a Bethel side which finished joint champions of Division One.

This term, Catrin has scored 14 goals for Division Two leaders Amlwch Town.

She also netted Ynys Mon’s goal in their 2-1 Inter-Island Games final defeat against Isle of Man last year.

Undoubtedly capable of playing at a higher level and is worthy of Wales selection.

Substitute

Rachel Evans

I don’t do substitutes, but I’ve bent the rules once today so why not again? I picked 12 players by mistake and didn’t want to drop any.

Rachel merits a chance to get some game time with this team.

She is a member of Llanfairfechan Town’s North Wales Recreational League side who is highly rated by all at the club.

Although Rachel has been doing a fine job at the back, the management are encouraging her to move into midfield.
